Spaced

SCNTST is probably one of the most fascinating producers flying under the radar out there right now. The 17 year old German prodigy on Boys Noize's label seems to switch up his style on every new remix or original that he puts out, all the while retaining a really high level of production quality. This remix is almost like some relaxing trip hop, which is definitely a switch up from his typical techno-inspired sound.

Hot Since 82 are the next big thing in deep house. Mark my words. Somewhere between the Hot Creations/Art Department sound that's become so popular over the past year, these dudes have been riding a wave of success with a string of really high quality releases recently. This original just might be their best effort yet. Pure fire.

A Case Of The Mondays

Every so often when it's a monday, I can find myself a little thrown off by the fact that the weekend is over and there's an entire week ahead before the glorious times that come between thursday and sunday, but then, after some thinking, I realize there's a solution... pounding, pounding techno music. And so, I make sure to go out and find the most banging, face crushing tracks I can find, and proceed to play them as loud as possible at myself. Only then is it possible to forget, at least for a little bit, that today's a monday. So, naturally, that's what I did this morning, and here are some of my best finds...

Mumbai Science are on some of that other shit. These belgian youngsters simply have a sound carved out for themselves that's unlike anything out there. Its somewhere in between techno and electro that escapes exact definition, but whatever it is there's no doubt that it's freaking LARGE. Their newest EP came out today, and it's already received support from Boys Noize, Tiga, and Crookers just to name a few. That should tell you pretty much everything you need to know about it. Here's one of the two songs on it, but be sure to grab the full thing off of beatport.
download: Mumbai Science - Researchers (Original Mix)

Dark and deep analog vibes pulse along all the way through this one, making me feel a bit like I'm lost in the basement of a berlin discotech every time I listen to it. Our friends over at Volta Bureau came out with this remix a couple months back and it managed to slip under our radar a bit, but I don't know how because it's absolutely incredible. Honestly, comparing this with their hit "Alley Cat", it's amazing how versatile these guys are. Definitely a group to watch in 2012 if you aren't already. This song is honestly too good, I'd feel guilty giving it away for free - make sure to buy it off of Beatport.
[Stream Only]: Pat Lok - No Shame (Volta Bureau Remix)

I recently came across a band called Computer Magic, and I've completely fallen in love with their sound. It's a dreamy, retro-styled approach to electronica that makes me think of summer days and summer haze. Play this one on the next sunny day. Be sure to follow her soundcloud for some more jams.
download: Computer Magic - Grand Junction

Lastly but definitely not least, more Grum is always good for you. I feel like listening to this song is pretty much exactly what doing cocaine in the 80s must have been like........

Now That Aint Right

In case you didn't notice the lack of an EDC Vegas review on our part, it should be noted that we were unable to attend. Sad, but true. Anyways, I found myself drooling over countless videos the other day and came across a couple shot at the main stage that made me backhand myself for not going. One featured Afrojack dropping this PeaceTreaty remix and the other was of Avicii playing his unreleased acid house tune, "Papa Was a Rolling Stone". I thought I couldn't be a bigger fan, but then he goes ahead and samples The Temptations. Fuckin' genius.
PeaceTreaty cuts out the second-half dubstep of the original and keeps it in the house. Certified BOMB
Sporty-O & Whiskey Pete - Heard of Us (PeaceTreaty Remix)

This rip was the best full version I could find and should tide you over until the official release, which will hopefully come sooner rather than later.
Avicii - Papa Was A Rolling Stone (128 kbps)

Definitely an oldie, but I came across this aptly named tune on shuffle and thought it deserved some postage.
Ichisan - Space Patrol

Grum has an uncanny ability to inject a fresh new twist into every remix he does. He puts his talents on display once again with this remix of "Skeleton", one of three songs off the recent EP by The Good Natured.
The Good Natured - Skeleton (Grum Remix)

Steed Lord's "The Eddie House" EP dropped yesterday and is a wonderful tribute to their house roots. They describe it as being "packed with burning hot disco house anthems with a french touch for all your 24-hour-daylight-bbq-pool-party-needs!" The first track, "You", is actually the first song they ever wrote and recorded together as a band, it was just never officially released. This is house music at its finest and I encourage all of you to grab the entire EP here, where you can also listen to each entire song.
Steed Lord - Im Coming Over by Steed Lord

Here are a couple of gems off another brand new EP, this time courtesy of Teenage Bad Girl. Fellow frenchie Alan Braxe and Bart B More throw their distinct flavors on the track and make some magic. These two are far and away my favorites. I have never not completely enjoyed a production from either of these guys. Braxe's has a little more groovy and smooth feel to it while Bart's hits a little harder (something I'm sure everyone has come to expect from him).

Like A Dog Without A Bone, An Actor All Alone

Some old, some newer, some hot off the press, and a preview of what’s to come. I’m bout to blow yo mindd.

English label owner, producer, and DJ, A. Skillz released this remix this past week and it’s beautiful. I'm always pleased when songs from back in the day resurface as more up to date, and equally good, remixes to find a new life. Such is the power of electronic music. A.Skillz manages to blend the soul and funk of the original with a dubby breakbeat of his own in a remarkably unique way.
Marlena Shaw - California Soul (A.Skillz Remix)

I love when I can associate a good song with a good memory and I can’t listen to this one without imagining myself back in the Carl Cox tent being a loon. Good times. The original of this didn’t strike me as anything that special, not to mention it’s just a rip off of “Original Challenge” by Umek and Tomy DeClerque, but TJR comes in and gives it a techy makeover like none other. I hadn’t heard much from Mr. TJ Rozdilsky since his remix of “Spinal Scratch” by the one and only Thomas Bangalter, but I’ll be looking out for this guy in the future for sure. Underground doesn't stop.
Whitenoize – The Underground (TJR Remix)

I also came across this while going through his soundcloud, and being the Doors aficionado I am, I felt obligated to post this groovy track. Another perfect example of great old school remixes.
TJR – Stoners on the Storm (The Doors Bootleg)

To put it modestly, we here at B&S have quite an infatuation with Nightriders, DCUP, and Grum. As Patrick said in an earlier post, these are matchups we dream of. The previews of these songs, part of the Get Hooked EP released today, melted me inside. The full releases... well that’s another story. Both remixes are distinctive in their own way, but the DCUP remix is probably my favorite at the moment; his vocal chopping ability continues to win me over time and time again. Grum, meanwhile, takes a progressive approach with wonderfully layered builds and drops, which , as I write this, have now begun to question which is my chosen favorite of the two (as I realize I've now listened to it almost 10 times in a row)... If you haven’t already, I suggest you throw these last few songs on some big ‘ol speakers and make room for dancing.
Nightriders – Get Hooked (DCUP Remix)

Nightriders – Get Hooked (Grum Remix)

You know what it is. The wait is over and the much anticipated track, “Ion”, by electro house giants TAI and D.I.M. has finally been released. Fuck what all the haters say; unless you’ve heard this live, especially if dropped by Boys Noize at Ultra, your opinion is invalid. As much as I like “Lyposuct”, this one takes the CAKE. Yea, that cake. Might as well take your socks off now, their about to get knocked the fuck outta here.
TAI, D.I.M. - Ion

Finally, a preview for an upcoming bomb of a remix from Laidback Luke, that he will hopefully drop at Lima Nightclub in D.C this Thursday. B&S will be in attendance. We we so excited
(To be released on June 27th on Luke’s own Mixmash Records)

Changed My State of Mind

So first things first. Tonight U Street Music Hall in DC is having one of their biggest events of the year tonight, Moombahton Massive IV. Now I'm not personally a huge fan of moombahton, especially as a headphone listening experience, but at a live show it's a whole different story. Bright and Shiny will be there so if any of you guys make it out to UHall tonight, come say hey and we can hook you up with a free sticker or two. So come get your dance on. Anyways... music time.

I'm a little late on this one, but I'm still extremely excited about it. New Nightriders remix of a Grum track. This is one of those dream matchups that I've been waiting to happen and it's been on repeat on my speakorz for the past week. This track is incredibly smooth, from the loungey synth lines to the catchy vocals.

Also check out the new original track that Nightriders just threw up on their Soundcloud.

Com Truise has been absolutely killing it lately both in terms of quality of his productions and in quantity. This Bright and Shiny favorite will be gracing the 930 Club on July 20th and we were lucky enough to be able to snag an interview with him, so be on the lookout for that in the coming month.

Disco aficionado and producer extraordinaire, Rockets brings us his new "sweaty" funk remix of Jacques Your Body by Les Rhymes Digitale. Sun-splashed and beach ready.

New York based Neo-Disco super group Hercules and Love Affair just recently did a cover The XX's 'Shelter' and they really revamped this classic in their own style. Bouncing bass and head bobbingly catchy percussion place this track in my daily rotation.

Electric Zoo: Day 2

12:45 pm: Grum

Grum was incredible. I (Patrick) was the only one of the Bright&Shiny crew to make it to this early afternoon performance and I'm so glad that I did. Grum has been one of my favorite producers for quite a while now with his funky disco dance bass lines and genius remixes. Originality just oozes from this man. As he was strolling through the crowd after his set, I was lucky enough to be able to stop him and have a little chat. Quiet and reserved, he was kind enough to sign the cover of his new EP (I Can't Shake This Feeling) that I had picked up at the merchandise stand before his performance. Needless to say, I love him and everything he does.

5:00 pm: Moby

Moby was cool. He chose a really old school rave track list and threw in some remixes of his own classics like Porcelain. I realized about 10 minutes in that he was using the exact same track list from one of his DJ sets a year ago, but I didn't mind 'cause it was virtually a perfect track selection anyway. Here are some of our favorites from it.

6:30 pm: Boys Noize

[Sir Real's screen name] (4:59:14 PM): how unremarkable was boys noize
[Augustus' screen name] (5:02:23 PM): yeah i thought he was being too like industrial and austerely crazy german for my likes
[Augustus] (5:02:44 PM): i usually dont like being assaulted like that when im fuzzily ENJOYING MYSELF [CONTENT CENSORED]
[Augustus] (5:03:00 PM): he was being mean

[Note: We LOVE Boys Noize, his set at Electric Zoo just didn't do anything to build upon his legend]

8:30 pm: A-Trak

So stupid. This man can cut like none other... literally, considering he won DMCs World DJ Championship in 1997 at age 15. Not only was this man scratching like the world champ that he is, he was dropping the heat left and right. A-Trak is by all regards a first rate DJ in any situation and seems to be most at home when spinning house. Plus, he announced that "Barbara Streisand" is due out October 4th! Not that we here at Bright & Shiny don't already have it for you in full 320 kbps quality... so sneaky. Here are the tracks I was together enough to write down from the set, all of which KILLED on the Red Bull Music Academy set up.
Jack Beats - Out Of Body

A-Trak - Loonies To Blow

Rogerseventytwo - Take Me Higher

Duck Sauce - Barbara Streisand (MAMIHLAPINATAPAI!)

9:30 pm: John Digweed

The deepest of the deep, John Digweed is a librarian of excellence in dance music. We had the opportunity to see Steve Aoki or Armin van Buuren during this time slot but chose instead to close out our experience at the Zoo with Mr. Digweed. I didn't even know any songs from the set because it was so deep (although there are a couple at the bottom, here), but it was goood and cleansed the soul with its minimal, bassy grooves. I had heard that this man was a legend and now I know why. If you ever have the opportunity to see John Digweed throw down I advise that you do so with haste.

Day 1 Wrap Up:

Axwell was dirty and functioned as the whole of Swedish House Mafia by dropping tons of SHM tracks including the amazing Miami 2 Ibiza. While my colleagues enjoyed the latter half of Benny Benassi, I (Patrick) couldn't resist heading over to catch some of this show. Axwell/SHM never do disappoint after all.

I Drank Too Much

I had about 30 tracks I was tryna post this afternoon, so here is the creme of the cream. Check out that space monkey, right?

So Grum is making beautiful full-fledged futuristic soundscapes at this point... propers are due to the 80's synth master.
Gamble & Burke - Let's Go Together (Grum Remix)

Louis La Roche knows how to put the "groovy" in "groovy french house." Haha I'm an idiot.
Boy Crisis - Fountain of Youth (Louis La Roche 'In the Discoteque' Remix)

In Augustus' absence (he's rafting in Oregon, the shit), I'm posting this song off a mix CD he left in my car. This track would scare the pants right off your grandmother.
Mightyfools - Amsterdam ft. Guerilla Speakerz (Dem Slackers Remix)

Vandalism vandalized this song. Thank goodness for them, otherwise I'd never feel completely comfortable listening to Katy Perry.
Katy Perry - Teenage Dream (Vandalism V8 Club Remix)

I saw this a week ago but I didn't want to post it until it had a name out of respect for its makers... deadmau5 & Wolfgang Gartner. Together. On one song. If this doesn't excite you, get the fuck off my blog.
deadmau5 & Wolfgang Gartner - Animal Rights

Obscure yet dirty electro grooves out of Berlin for your soul.
ULTRNX - Rockstr (GhettosexXx Remix)

the Clubhaus
It does not get crazier than this Proxy fellow. Thank you, Russia.
Congorock - Babylon (Proxy Remix)

BONUS!!
Proxy - Raven (HQ Rip)

I hope P. Diddy commissioned this remix cause that would be so sweet.
P. Diddy - Hello Good Morning (Erick Morillo & Eddie Thoneick Mix)

This one will get you dancing.
Kid Massive, Bass Kleph & Chris Arnott - All Right (Original Mix)

Better start packing, only 2 days 'til Electric Zoo, NY!

Going Away

Since I'll be riding in a random shit filled car tomorrow for 14 hours as I go off to St. Louis, I've decided to leave you all with a going away gift a bit early. The songs I have today are especially delectable. Eat em up.

I'll start things off with a very well done remix from UNC whiz kid, Hidden Cat. This isn't any face-pounding banger or get-on-the-dance-floor jam, but it's oh so nice.
Dirty Projectors - Stillness in the Move (Hidden Cat Remix)

Don't know anything about these LOL Boys, but they did a damn good job with this. This remix of AC Slater's "Hello" sounds absolutely nothing like the original, but that doesn't mean it isn't amazing. Very low-key.
AC Slater - Hello (LOL Boys Sunday Sunrise Remix)

Coma Cat + Go Go Bizkitt. Enough said.
Tensnake - Coma Cat! (Go Go Bizkitt Remix)

This Grum beauty really gets going late in the track.
Grum - Want U

PUNCHES, a Brooklyn duo comprised of two twin brother DJ's, have been putting a fresh spin on that disco house sound recently, as you'll see with this remix. Lovin the vocal sample.
Au Revoir Simone - Only You Can Make You Happy (PUNCHES Remix)

Fantastic remix from Aeons.
Amy Meredith - Young at Heart (Aeons Remix) [REMOVED BY REQUEST]

This last one is by far and away my favorite. It's incredible. Fred Falke and Alan Braxe by themselves produce gold. Together, they can do no wrong.
Jamiroquai - Alright (Fred Falke and Alan Braxe Remix)

-PK

Because I can.

The Only - Top of the Jam (Autoerotique Remix)

Uh oh it's August

It's Patrick again..

It's August now boys and girls. The weather is hot, the air is humid, and it's time to relish the fleeting days of summer in the best way you know how; blasting good tunes.

The latest signee to Ajax’ record label, Sweat it Out, Australia's own DCUP has already drawn comparisons with Treasure Fingers, Miami Horror, and Shazam, from influential names in the industry. He’s funk fuelled disco for right now. Signed in May, this year, he’s the seventh artist to join the cutting edge roster of Sweat it Out members. Others include Gameboy/Gamegirl, Act Yo Age, KillaQueenz, Yoland Be Cool, and Pablo Calamari.

DCUP - Last Night A DJ Saved My Life

Graeme Shepherd, also known as Grum, grew up in Linlithgow, near Edinburgh, on a diet of classic rock and synth-pop. After landing a deal with UK's HeartBeats Records, The 24 year-old Scotsman has become on of the UK's most important new dance producers.

Everything Everything - MY KZ, UR BF (Grum Remix) [Removed by request]

This track is from the sound track to Quentin Dupieux's (Mr. Oizo) new movie entitled Rubber. Mr. Oizo, a 36 year old french music producer with Ed Banger Records, collaborated with Justice, and specifically Gaspard Auge to create the soundtrack. In the November 2009 issue of Mixmag, Justice stated that they had to finish working on this soundtrack before beginning to record their new album.

After gaining respect for the remixes he made for world-renowned artists such as Steve Aoki, Major Lazer, N.A.S.A, The Shoes, autoKratz, Tom Deluxx, Royskopp to name only a few, LaTourette released two tracks on CocoMachette Rec (USA/NY).

arrogantmau4

Note: free music is available below the following breathless rant.

We all saw deadmau5 perform at the 9:30 Club this past Wednesday. Not only was our collective evening marred by problems both in and outside of the club, but the mau5 simply did not live up to our hopes and expectations. The openers were Will Eastman and Pleasurekraft, and I was only able to catch the latter. He wasn't very good, a bit too deep and underwhelming for my tastes probably because he wasn't playing very loudly, but he did serve to warm up the crowd toward the end of his set. Then Joel took the stage beckoning the crowd to a deafening roar with his signature unhealthily floppy hands. What followed his entrance was basically an exercise in idol worship. The mau5 mounted his large, expensive cube, put on his hat, pressed "play" and then proceeded to get his rocks off by watching the crowd and dancing to his own music while drinking beer. Now this is not to say I didn't rave my ass off, because I most certainly did. However, when I pay 40 dollars in US currency to go to a concert, I expect a little more than the exact studio versions of the songs I've come to know and love.

Ever since I got into electronic music I had to defend the act of going to artists' concerts just because no one could ever understand what it was they were even doing up there, other than playing the music, that would justify spending one's hard-earned money to see an artist live. When I saw Justice's "A Cross The Universe" tour so many years ago they played through most of their debut album "Cross," in addition to some of their remix selection. But the glaring difference between that performance and deadmau5' was that Justice re-edited every single track and even remixed some in order to make them more dancefloor friendly, in the process creating a notable and fucking phenomenal live experience with their MUSIC and studio/live expertise, not by simply introducing an insane light show into the equation.

And so I charge deadmau5, a technical sorcerer whose productions are absolutely peerless, with the task of creating a live show that isn't downright shameful. In the studio before the tour or on the fly, you must do something because at this point I am unimpressed and frankly cannot believe that you can look at yourself in the mirror; you're not even trying up there, dude. I understand that you're not a DJ and don't appreciate or respect the art of DJing, you've made that clear before, but I do insist that you use your apparent technical skill to go into the studio and produce a live show that you can be proud of and that your (musically educated) fans will love.

But this is only upsetting because I love deadmau5' music and have such respect for his work, as much as I despise the arrogant prick known as Joel Zimmerman. Or maybe it's the fact that today when I commented on a Facebook status update of his about the Thursday 9:30 show saying as much as I have above Joel read the comment and deleted it after it had received multiple likes, confirming that this asshole of a mouse cannot take criticism, constructive or scathing. Whatta bitch.

Anyway, in honor of this dead mau5 (R.I.P.) I'll start things off with one of his songs. I had never heard this before Wednesday and when the melody came climbing out of the distorted chaos erupting from the speakers it sounded ominous and alien; I simply lost my marbles. One of the mau5' more danceable tracks.

Deadmau5 - Arguru

I don't know anything about Bassjackers except that they're Dutch and that I like it when they make music. They tend to keep their dirty Dutch sounds in a lower register than most, or at least Afrojack, and their drums KNOCK. See "Stronger ft. Bizzey (Original Mix)" for a less hardcore, french-house inspired track.

Bassjackers & Ralvero - Bang Like A (Original Mix)

This one's from GRUM, a producer I've been watching ever since his remix of Armand Van Helden's "You Don't Know Me" was the only version of the song I could get my hands on after scouring the internet for hours. "Can't Shake This Feeling" is a groovy, electro house song complete with obscure, pitched-up vocals and a fatass bassline.

You'll find that I occasionally pepper my posts with hip-hop, and that starts now. This joint from Fat Joe is just right, but this isn't Joe's doing, not by a long shot. He raps well enough, but the real genius here is in the production by duo Cool & Dre. When these boys do "soulful" they do it right.

Bit Funk turns the verses of Bussa Buss' "Hustler's Anthem" into a veritable House Anthem with his funky synth treatment. Plus the only Rappa Turnt Sanga makes an appearance on the hook.

Hustler's Anthem 09 - Busta Rhymes ft. T-Pain (Bit Funk Remix)

Finally, the funkiest banger of an electro house song I've heard out of prog-house duo Spencer & Hill yet.

Spencer & Hill - Housebeat
