Like A Dog Without A Bone, An Actor All Alone

Some old, some newer, some hot off the press, and a preview of what’s to come. I’m bout to blow yo mindd.

English label owner, producer, and DJ, A. Skillz released this remix this past week and it’s beautiful. I'm always pleased when songs from back in the day resurface as more up to date, and equally good, remixes to find a new life. Such is the power of electronic music. A.Skillz manages to blend the soul and funk of the original with a dubby breakbeat of his own in a remarkably unique way.
Marlena Shaw - California Soul (A.Skillz Remix)

I love when I can associate a good song with a good memory and I can’t listen to this one without imagining myself back in the Carl Cox tent being a loon. Good times. The original of this didn’t strike me as anything that special, not to mention it’s just a rip off of “Original Challenge” by Umek and Tomy DeClerque, but TJR comes in and gives it a techy makeover like none other. I hadn’t heard much from Mr. TJ Rozdilsky since his remix of “Spinal Scratch” by the one and only Thomas Bangalter, but I’ll be looking out for this guy in the future for sure. Underground doesn't stop.
Whitenoize – The Underground (TJR Remix)

I also came across this while going through his soundcloud, and being the Doors aficionado I am, I felt obligated to post this groovy track. Another perfect example of great old school remixes.
TJR – Stoners on the Storm (The Doors Bootleg)

To put it modestly, we here at B&S have quite an infatuation with Nightriders, DCUP, and Grum. As Patrick said in an earlier post, these are matchups we dream of. The previews of these songs, part of the Get Hooked EP released today, melted me inside. The full releases... well that’s another story. Both remixes are distinctive in their own way, but the DCUP remix is probably my favorite at the moment; his vocal chopping ability continues to win me over time and time again. Grum, meanwhile, takes a progressive approach with wonderfully layered builds and drops, which , as I write this, have now begun to question which is my chosen favorite of the two (as I realize I've now listened to it almost 10 times in a row)... If you haven’t already, I suggest you throw these last few songs on some big ‘ol speakers and make room for dancing.
Nightriders – Get Hooked (DCUP Remix)

Nightriders – Get Hooked (Grum Remix)

You know what it is. The wait is over and the much anticipated track, “Ion”, by electro house giants TAI and D.I.M. has finally been released. Fuck what all the haters say; unless you’ve heard this live, especially if dropped by Boys Noize at Ultra, your opinion is invalid. As much as I like “Lyposuct”, this one takes the CAKE. Yea, that cake. Might as well take your socks off now, their about to get knocked the fuck outta here.
TAI, D.I.M. - Ion

Finally, a preview for an upcoming bomb of a remix from Laidback Luke, that he will hopefully drop at Lima Nightclub in D.C this Thursday. B&S will be in attendance. We we so excited
(To be released on June 27th on Luke’s own Mixmash Records)
GTA feat. Zashanell - U&I (Laidback Luke Remix) [Mixmash] by upcoming-soon

Tensnake music video of his recent single I’ve been meaning to post. Man, I wish we were doing this at that age.

Pudding

Alongside today's usual pick of quality tracks is a little treat for everyone to enjoy. I'll leave it for the end though. Can't have your pudding if you don't eat your meat, as they say.

We'll start off on a slightly different note than normal with an Australian by the name of Pogo. I heard some of his productions ages ago, and was immediately mystified by his incredibly unique sound. Taking the tiniest of samples from classic nostalgic films like Alice in Wonderland and Mary Poppins, he forms an incredibly intricate and seamless mix of different noises that all complement each other perfectly. I could honestly listen to his stuff for hours; it's quite unlike anything else I listen to. Here's one of his latest, which pieces together bits of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.

Bonus Pogo!

And now for something completely different. More noise from the Dutch, this time in the form of Seductive, who's Hard Rockin EP was released on beatport today. Check it out here. The EP features remixes of Heat it Up, and Rockin', a heavy hitter with a tribal ass drum pattern. I also recommend checking out the preview of Get Yo Hands Up that he has on his website; it sounds huge.

Next up in our main course combo, DCUP. I don't need to say much here; everyone who reads this blog knows how much we all love this guy's stuff. Found this remix of one of my favorite tracks from Phonat earlier today. It doesn't disappoint.

Alright, so you know how I was taking about pudding earlier? Well, I was referring to none other than the man, the myth, the legend, Mr. Wolfgang Gartner, who put together an incredible Essential Mix for the highly esteemed Radio 1 recently. It's got pretty much everything you could ask for in a mix, including plenty of his personal productions, with smooooth transitioning throughout. Unfortunately the 320 file was too big for measly zippyshare to handle, so I uploaded it to my soundcloud. Have at it below in all its glory.

Thank You, Come Again

"Ambition is a poor excuse for not having enough sense to be lazy" - Milan Kundera

I'm currently taking a lit class on Milan Kundera, a 20th century Czech author, and want to recommend to any of you readers out there an amazing novel by the name of The Unbearable Lightness of Being. Prepare yourself for some serious existentialism. Ok, onto the tunes.

Dublin Aunts are really coming into their own. We recently received an email from them with their new unreleased original track and an explanation on how their sound has moved in a more Aeroplane-esque direction, and personally I am very pleased about this. I'm loving the vocals, and the bass...and pretty much everything I'm hearing. They also put up 2 new remixes on their soundcloud. Be sure to check them out.

Treasure Finger's It's Love is one of my favorite songs right now. The pitched up vocals for the track were provided by one of his female friends. Now remixing such a beautiful track is a dangerous game, but Charles I seems to have chopped and screwed his way to victory with this one.

The Swiss, despite the tricky name, hail from Adelaide, Australia. Their sexy smooth brand of boutique disco is really pleasing to the ears. This 4 part group definitely struck gold with this track, blending just the right synths in just the right ways to get you off your ass and on the dance floor. Also, check out the Knightlife remix.

Toomy Disco, aka Mariano Ilutia, is a 22 year old Argentinian electronic music composer. His description of himself reads "I still have a lot to learn about the configurations and possibilities that computer-assisted music offers". Rather modest for someone who puts out disco thrillers like this one...

Here. More intro-less DCUP smash hits. No need to tell you how good it is when you can just hit play.

Bonus:

In case you haven't seen already, DCUP threw up a new mix on his soundcloud a couple weeks ago and its bonkers good. I'm your #1 fan...

Awesome setting, awesome dancing, awesome cinematography, awesome music. Awesome.

This relaxing documentary of Bali really brings me back to warmer days.

Lazy Sunday

Hey guys, it's Patrick and.................................I'm sleepy. These songs are real good. Trust in me, just in me.

This first song is pure craziness and I love it. Leno Lovecraft is a new face, at least for me, and from the looks of things he's got nowhere to go but up up up.

Rainbows of Death has become a staple on all my best playlists. They do good stuff.

Bloody Beetroots people. Two thumbs up for them. Relaaaax.

Drrrreeeeeaaaamm syyyynnthhsssssssssssss. Good job Anoraak.

After seeing Chromeo live, I've acquired an intangible bond to their music. This song is typical Chromeo, but oh so welcome.

This next song is awwwwesome. Savage Skulls and Douster recently released this song on Mad Decent. That's Robyn singing with her super Swedish voice.

This song isn't new, but that doesn't make any less good. Not really sure what genre to put this in.

Oh hi DCUP. I love you so much.

Electric Zoo: Day 2

12:45 pm: Grum

Grum was incredible. I (Patrick) was the only one of the Bright&Shiny crew to make it to this early afternoon performance and I'm so glad that I did. Grum has been one of my favorite producers for quite a while now with his funky disco dance bass lines and genius remixes. Originality just oozes from this man. As he was strolling through the crowd after his set, I was lucky enough to be able to stop him and have a little chat. Quiet and reserved, he was kind enough to sign the cover of his new EP (I Can't Shake This Feeling) that I had picked up at the merchandise stand before his performance. Needless to say, I love him and everything he does.

5:00 pm: Moby

Moby was cool. He chose a really old school rave track list and threw in some remixes of his own classics like Porcelain. I realized about 10 minutes in that he was using the exact same track list from one of his DJ sets a year ago, but I didn't mind 'cause it was virtually a perfect track selection anyway. Here are some of our favorites from it.

6:30 pm: Boys Noize

[Sir Real's screen name] (4:59:14 PM): how unremarkable was boys noize
[Augustus' screen name] (5:02:23 PM): yeah i thought he was being too like industrial and austerely crazy german for my likes
[Augustus] (5:02:44 PM): i usually dont like being assaulted like that when im fuzzily ENJOYING MYSELF [CONTENT CENSORED]
[Augustus] (5:03:00 PM): he was being mean

[Note: We LOVE Boys Noize, his set at Electric Zoo just didn't do anything to build upon his legend]

8:30 pm: A-Trak

So stupid. This man can cut like none other... literally, considering he won DMCs World DJ Championship in 1997 at age 15. Not only was this man scratching like the world champ that he is, he was dropping the heat left and right. A-Trak is by all regards a first rate DJ in any situation and seems to be most at home when spinning house. Plus, he announced that "Barbara Streisand" is due out October 4th! Not that we here at Bright & Shiny don't already have it for you in full 320 kbps quality... so sneaky. Here are the tracks I was together enough to write down from the set, all of which KILLED on the Red Bull Music Academy set up.
Jack Beats - Out Of Body

A-Trak - Loonies To Blow

Rogerseventytwo - Take Me Higher

Duck Sauce - Barbara Streisand (MAMIHLAPINATAPAI!)

9:30 pm: John Digweed

The deepest of the deep, John Digweed is a librarian of excellence in dance music. We had the opportunity to see Steve Aoki or Armin van Buuren during this time slot but chose instead to close out our experience at the Zoo with Mr. Digweed. I didn't even know any songs from the set because it was so deep (although there are a couple at the bottom, here), but it was goood and cleansed the soul with its minimal, bassy grooves. I had heard that this man was a legend and now I know why. If you ever have the opportunity to see John Digweed throw down I advise that you do so with haste.

Day 1 Wrap Up:

Axwell was dirty and functioned as the whole of Swedish House Mafia by dropping tons of SHM tracks including the amazing Miami 2 Ibiza. While my colleagues enjoyed the latter half of Benny Benassi, I (Patrick) couldn't resist heading over to catch some of this show. Axwell/SHM never do disappoint after all.

What's Mine is Yours

Yo. Still at the beach, so naturally, I've been a little lazy finding new music for you all. Most of today's post will be songs I've had for a while now, but that doesn't mean you should ignore them. All of these tracks are a must-listen. Check it.

Startin' off with some french house from Greek nu-disco whiz, Poka. I downloaded a mix from him a while ago that was pure gold, but haven't really been following him since then. This was just released on his soundcloud.
Poka - 99 Style

Yeah, I know. DCUP.
Cosmo Black - When Night Becomes the Morn (DCUP Remix)

Got a remix of the Uffie & Pharell track "ADD SUV" from Carte Blanche. Who's that, you say? No one big or anything, just a superduo comprised of DJ Mehdi and Riton.
Uffie Ft. Pharell - ADD SUV (Carte Blanche Mix)

This electrifying remix of Dragonette's "Pick Up the Phone" from Michael D. of Van She has always been a hit wherever I've played it. Blast this.
Dragonette - Pick Up the Phone (Michael Van She Remix)

"Love Hits the Fan", an original from 7 ft. tall (that's right) Italian DJ Phonat, features some unorthodox buildups and vocal loops, but I can't get enough of it. My only complaint is that it's too short.
Phonat - Love Hits the Fan

I'm not always the biggest Uffie fan, but everything about this one, as simple as it is, feels perfect.
Uffie - Difficult

This one doesn't really sound like all the songs I've been posting, but it's fucking magnificent. I demand that you give it a listen, especially as it unfolds into an all out jam sesh about midway through. Its an excellent summer anthem.
Blackbird Blackbird - Hawaii (Sunvisor Remix)

Beach Jammin' Part Two

Well, I'm here at the beach with everyone's favorite PK. I wanna get back in the water, so I'm gonna keep this nice and easy. Here is a series of songs that you will love, then download. Yeah? Yeah.

The first song today is a nice variation of Animal by Miike Snow. Treasure Fingers dropped this at his show at U Street Music Hall Saturday night, and I can tell you first hand the crowd was lovin' it.

Where all my NSA brothas and sistas at? This song will get you movin' and groovin' in no time (give it 30 seconds).

Bit Funk just delivers delivers delivers. Kick back in the hammock and soak up the sun my friends.

I know I'm all over DCUP's nuts. But of all people, he's most deserving. I think we can all agree that Rainbows of Death does him justice.

Nightriders, a dance duo from Boston, comin' at you with some nice french filter house. Hell Yes.

Flashworx is an up and coming swiss/italian duo I found on SoundCloud a while ago. They recently released their first EP, Two Guys In Japan. Check out the myspace for more yummy 80's vibe disco/italopop tunes: Flashworx

Dragonette is hot and has a great voice. Thank you Fabian for turning this into a lesson on relaxation.

Now back to beach.
Love, Patrick

Don't Worry

Whattup everyone, PK here. I'll get right into the nitty-gritty with this post. If you have any doubts about the songs I'm about to bestow upon you, refer above.

Anything that bears this Atlanta based DJ's name is a must-have for me, but this is just extraordinary. Check it.
Treasure Fingers - Lift Me

DCUP keeps poppin' up here on Bright and Shiny, a testament to the groove-inducing power he has over his listeners. This Airwolf remix is no exception.
DCUP - To Be in Love (Airwolf Remix)

Don't really know much about either of these artists, but I still love this song. It really comes into it's own late in the track, so be patient, and you'll find it's well worth the wait.
Teeth - See Spaces (Dreamtrak Diamond Sound Remix)

I'll change things up here with some more serious electro. Again, you might have to wait a little for it to really hit its stride, but when it does, it's bonkers.
Evil Nine - Ultimo

Here's some certified electro-funk from Eumig & Chinon, who have been shakin' up the blogosphere recently with their new EP, "Crash"
Data/Debt - California Special (Eumig & Chinon Remix)

Gigamesh makes Mike Posner's vocals tolerable. End of story.
Mike Posner - Cooler Than Me (Gigamesh Remix)

And finally, I leave you with an absolute banger of a track from Swedish duo Dada Life. This one is sure to get the crowd going when the drop hits.
Dada Life - Cookies with a Smile (Original Mix)

Happy Thursday!

Uh oh it's August

It's Patrick again..

It's August now boys and girls. The weather is hot, the air is humid, and it's time to relish the fleeting days of summer in the best way you know how; blasting good tunes.

The latest signee to Ajax’ record label, Sweat it Out, Australia's own DCUP has already drawn comparisons with Treasure Fingers, Miami Horror, and Shazam, from influential names in the industry. He’s funk fuelled disco for right now. Signed in May, this year, he’s the seventh artist to join the cutting edge roster of Sweat it Out members. Others include Gameboy/Gamegirl, Act Yo Age, KillaQueenz, Yoland Be Cool, and Pablo Calamari.

DCUP - Last Night A DJ Saved My Life

Graeme Shepherd, also known as Grum, grew up in Linlithgow, near Edinburgh, on a diet of classic rock and synth-pop. After landing a deal with UK's HeartBeats Records, The 24 year-old Scotsman has become on of the UK's most important new dance producers.

Everything Everything - MY KZ, UR BF (Grum Remix) [Removed by request]

This track is from the sound track to Quentin Dupieux's (Mr. Oizo) new movie entitled Rubber. Mr. Oizo, a 36 year old french music producer with Ed Banger Records, collaborated with Justice, and specifically Gaspard Auge to create the soundtrack. In the November 2009 issue of Mixmag, Justice stated that they had to finish working on this soundtrack before beginning to record their new album.

After gaining respect for the remixes he made for world-renowned artists such as Steve Aoki, Major Lazer, N.A.S.A, The Shoes, autoKratz, Tom Deluxx, Royskopp to name only a few, LaTourette released two tracks on CocoMachette Rec (USA/NY).

Introductions

What's up everyone, I'm PK, although I'm sure most of you already know me as Peter. Now, I may not have the music production experience my blogmates do, but what I lack in technical savvy I make up for with a pure, unadulterated love for all things house and electronic. I hope that with this blog, I can share my passion with you all. Now for some musikz.

This first track has all the makings of a house classic. Bostonian dance duo Nightriders perfect that french house sound with a delicious bassline and some masterful sampling.

Nightriders - Through the Night

Next, I have Australia's own DCUP and his beautiful, synth-tastic remix of Priors' "What You Need"

Priors - What You Need (DCUP Remix)

And finally, I give you one of my favorite tracks of the summer. Riva Starr brings in some funky jungle beats and electric breakdowns to accompany Beth Ditto's haunting vocals in this remix of Gossip's "Love Long Distance"

Gossip - Love Long Distance (Riva Starr Vocal Mix)

Hope everyone enjoys their weekend...I certainly will.

BONUS!!!

Tittsworth - WTF (Nadastrom on Drugs Remix)
