This next one is far and away the mega anthem of this post. A Dubfire classic from a couple years back, I stumbled on this one when my iPod was on shuffle and let me tell you this is a timeless monster. At over 10 minutes long it's a song explicitly crafted for destroying dance floors in the way that only Dubfire knows how. Every phase of the song is different and bigger and better than the last section, and it seems to steadily build into a massive crescendo at the end. This song is literally destined to be blasted out of festival speakers. I love the part around the 3 minute mark when it really takes off with the vocals strobing in and out of the beat.

Nicky Romero's masterful reworking of Green Velvet's Flash is a track that everyone has heard by now, (whether they know it or not) as it was played at just about every festival in the world for this past year. Romero has come up with another huge track on his remix of Sidney Samson's Dynamite here. The name 'Dynamite' is fitting because thats exactly what this track is.. dynamite. The drop is ridiculously big. The first time I heard it I thought it was almost too jarring how suddenly it just slams you in the face, but the more and more I'm listening to it the more I'm realizing it's straight genius. I can't even imagine this track blasting out of the speakers in a festival setting... it would be simply ridiculous. I'm actually completely mystified that this next track never got more attention from everyone, including by myself. I only bothered to download it the other day, but why I have no idea. Avicii and Daft Punk, that's like a dream combination.. And this track actually lives up to the hype. Avicii takes the ominous Daft Punk track Derezzed from the recent Tron movie and transforms it into an elating wondrous chunk of melodic house. I remember Avicii dropping this main stage at ultra and watching the entire crowd go berserk, people jumping all over the place and every single hand reaching straight into the air.. Up next I have two new tracks from Dutch duo Bingo Players. Just a warning, if you're looking for another 'Cry (Just A Little)' you're not about to get it. These two tracks are more along the lines of the duo's first breakthrough hit 'Devotion,' showcasing a really unique, stripped-down tribal style of dutch house. Both of these tracks are completely bonkers. Fellow Dutch duo Chocolate Puma's deserves credit for their influence on the second track, 'Disco Electrique' too. Swedish youngster Alesso has been on the tip of everyone's tongue recently after his massive remix of Pressure basically took over the world, getting a #1 spot on the beatport charts and finding its way into sets by everyone from Avicii to Swedish House Mafia. He's back here on a huuuuge remix of the recent SHM single 'Save The World', taking the track and giving it a (much needed) harder edge than the original. The drop around the 4:30 mark is incredible. Rising Dutch star R3hab shows here that he can do more than the standard off-the-wall dutch house drops that he's known for, going for a more progressive leaning sound on this one. Finally I need the help of everyone in the Bright & Shiny nation with a beatport account on this one. Whether you know it or not, there's currently a remix competition going on for Afrojack & Quintino's track Selecta. The winner gets an official release on Afrojack's label, Wall Recordings, along with a bunch of other cool stuff. My good friend Ekstra has recently submitted his own remix, and I need all of your help in the voting process to help get him some attention. Avicii invaded our nation's capital this past weekend and completely tore the house down. Opening DJ Matt Goldman put on one of the best opening sets I've seen in a long time, getting the crowd's blood flowing just in time for Avicii's entrance with a concoction of progressive and techy sounds. Avicii climbed onto the decks around midnight to the raucous cheers of a sold-out crowd at Fur nightclub and proceeded to crush the dance floor with a 3 hour set that featured most of his biggest hits alongside other relatively unknown yet equally massive bangers. Good vibes persisted and energy was high throughout, with fists pumping and people jumping around from start to finish; ending the night with the crowd firmly in the palm of his hand. Toward the end of his set, Avicii played a murderous block of his anthems back to back to back, with the crowd belting out every song at the top of their lungs or otherwise singing along to the familiar melodies with unintelligible syllables of passion. It was exhaustively awesome.
This first track was probably one of my favorite selections out of the entire night, the first drop sounds absolutely INCREDIBLE on a huge system. Do yourself a favor and skip to the 1 minute mark and wait for the drop if you want to FEEL what it was like to be there on Saturday. For his encore at about 3 AM, Avicii played a combination of two remixes of the classic Adrian Lux anthem ' Teenage Crime,' starting with the techy intro of the Axwell Remode and mixing into the end of Daniel Rose's massive big room edit (download them both below). And then to follow that up and close out what was a legendary night Avicii did one of the coolest things I've ever seen live, mixing straight into what I can only guess was his personal edit of 1990's hip hop anthem 'Jump Around' by House of Pain, replete with fat-ass kicks underneath. Needless to say, the crowd went absolutely NUTS, with everyone doing their best to do as the song says and jump around like crazy people. I hope you're starting to grasp how fucking insane it was at Fur this Saturday, with people constantly going bonkers to the soaring sounds of the Swedish Savant, Avicii. Let's just get this one out of the way first. The track people have been calling "ID" between breaths of fog machine fog and man musk was leaked today and it has a new name: "Levels." Our boy Avicii has outdone himself again, with a track that sounds polished, professional, and most certainly well beyond his 21 years. It still sets my soul soaring after having heard the instrumental for the last three months on a semi-daily basis. What can you say? The dude knows what the people what and just how to give it to 'em. There's nothing Sir Real likes more than hearing seemingly disjointed, atonal beats which coalesce into a melodious banger right before his very ears. The first and last thing Don Diablo did right on his new track "Animale" was getting Dragonette on the vocals. Dunno what it is about her voice, but ya girl currently holds the highly coveted top spot on the prestigious "Sir Real's Favorite Shit List" in the "Female Dance Music Vocalist" category. Oliver does some serious work on this track, plucking a most evocative and tantalizing vocal phrase from the original and planting his vision around it. It starts off solidly, moving in a french house sort of direction before Oliver goes off on a mawfucka and turns the track into a massive disco track of anthemic proportion. Don Diablo ft. Junior Jack kkiillss it on this track, which feels like the perfect homage to his French Touch predecessors, Thomas Bangalter and Guy de Homem-Christo. No one can take a tiny keyboard sample, screw it up and throw a FAT bassline under it quite like those Daft Punk fellas, but Jack gives them a run for their money on this thumping mix. This is where shit starts to get weird. Found this track over at the insanely-on-top-of-their-shit GDD... it's almost like blogging is those dudes job or something, damn. Anyway, Finger Prince are a couple of crazy kiddos from Botswana who know how to make techno JUST how I like it: with some funk and a large serving of "HOT DAMN." French blog-household names Para One, Surkin, and Bobmo have combined to form a The Marble Players. Their first track, "Playground," is 100% USDA approved techno music. It's surprising to hear this sort of thing out of three artists whose music was so much a part of the blog house movement, but also refreshing as hell. Marble Players - Playground
So long story short, this is a track from my favorite DJ set to date: Sven Vath's Essential Mix at Cocoon. Back in the day, I figured I was just listening to some strange German man play house beats, but it so turns out that what I was listening to was in fact techno. I don't know where I'm going with this because beatport claims this song is electro house (what do they know anyway?), but the point is that I've always had a soft spot in my heart for freaky techno, especially when served masterfully by the hands of a middle-aged German wizard on four hits of acid. Since 1993, Jori Hulkkonen has been producing sickeningly crazy techno music, but I just found him and this song yesterday so don't believe a word I say. When I played this song to my roommate his first response was to tell me a story about how he and some friends stumbled into a club in Vienna where this sort of music was being played and promptly ran out of the place fearing for their sanity. I simply replied that I intend to spend some time in Vienna as soon as possible. Hallucinogenic drugs can have devastating and long-lasting effects on one's psyche. When this beat drops around the four-minute mark you had better make sure you're somewhere where improper behavior is encouraged. Dinky - Acid In My Fridge (Visionquest Remix)
Representing the District of Columbia (Bright&Shiny's home), Pleasurekraft brings us a smashing tech house track that's sure to get asses shaking. Believe me, this music may sound underwhelming to you as you sit at home listening on your MacBook Pro's speakers. But when played by the right person in a dimly lit warehouse filled with people who love to dance, this shit will have a serious impact on the well-being of all involved. Finally, the track which inspired the theme of this post: Funkerman's remix of Moby's "The Day." This is demented tech house at its finest, fit for playing only in the darkest and dankest clubs of Berlin's underground. It scares the living shit out of you, but not before forcefully compelling you to dance uncontrollably and without regard for human life. Funkerman's debut album is set to come out this year and I for one will be waiting with bated breath to see what other sorts of madness this man can stir up. Moby - The Day (Funkerman Remix)

With three years in the public eye, Lone has proven himself a producer capable of excellence with any number of styles. A regular-lookin' dude from Bristol, Julio Bashmore separated himself from the bustling bass scene with his cultivated, and decidedly techy take on house music. This track straight blows my fuckin' mind, that's the only way to put it. At first glance, you think the song is just about fully developed by the 2-minute mark, and then you sense the real song stirring from the depths around 3:12, taking the track to an unprecedented level of bangin'. We'll start things out at a bit of a slower pace here. This Kaskade remix of J Boogie's Dub Science doesn't sound like the typical big room progressive Kaskade you're probably used to hearing. It's more like a hearkening back to his roots with the San Francisco based lounge-house label Om Records, where he used to make some seriously chilled out tunes. This sexy downtempo effort is reminiscent of that older stuff, except for it's more refined and shows hes clearly still growing as an artist almost 15 years later. Sticky K's long awaited Prince of Persia EP came out on itunes the other day, with the full release on beatport set for march 22nd, and it's absolutely MASSIVE. Off of the Miami Noize 2 compilation, which came out earlier this month on Boys Noize Records, this Strip Steve original is a maddeningly catchy house stomper. The song is centered around an awesome jumbled up synth/piano-stab melody that pulses along with an upbeat, relentless sense of purpose (i.e. makes you want to dance). Be sure to grab the Miami Noize compilation off beatport, as it's stacked from top to bottom with some really quality tracks. Strip Steve - The Freaks (Original Mix)
The new Dillon Francis Westside EP, out now on Mad Decent, is completely outrageous. It features a blend of tribal-sounding dancehall music that sounds reminiscent of Portugal's J-Wow in a lot of ways and demonstrates that Francis is definitely one of the most talented young artists emerging on the scene right now. Check out two of the tracks below, but be sure to grab the whole EP since it's full of a bunch of other awesome tracks including a good moombahton collaboration with DC's own Dave Nada. This comes off of Brodinski's Best of Everything vol 2 unofficial compilation, which was a project where he asked his various favorite producers to remix random rap/r&b songs. Steve Aoki really impresses on this new Klaxons remix, showing that he's equally adept at making beautiful melody-driven house as he is at pumping out crazy party anthems or running his label Dim Mak. This new rework by Erol Alkan is completely gorgeous and shows why he's considered one of the most respected producers in the game, cause this is hardly the average hard-hitting house he's normally affiliated with. This and the MGMT rework he did a while ago are two of my favorite pieces by him, maybe this is signalling a new, more acoustic direction for him? Either way, this one is awesome. Swedish producer and DJ Avicii burst onto the electronic music scene in 2008 at the young age of 18 with his track "Lazy Lace" (Strike Recordings), a remix he did of the theme song of "Lazy Jones" for the Commodore 64. From that point forward, Avicii spent hours in his home studio intoxicated by his craft, cranking out smashing tune after smashing tune. Later in 2008, Avicii entered Pete Tong's Fast Trax competition and won in a landslide victory with his track "Manman" receiving 70% percent of votes. The release of "Manman" on Pete Tong's label Bedroom Bedlam afforded Avicii quite a bit of visibility in the industry. Shortly thereafter, he was contacted by numerous labels, promoters and booking agencies the world over, firmly launching his career as a unique producer of melodic tracks and pounding beats.
Two weeks ago, I had the pleasure of seeing the Swedish savant spin at the Mid, Chicago, an experience I will not soon forget for its euphoric sounds, masterful mixing, and the absolute madness Avicii incited in the hearts of the crowd. I was fortunate enough to get to sit down with the man himself and ask him a few questions just before he took the stage. Here's how our conversation went:
[Bright & Shiny] The first song of yours I ever heard was "My Feelings For You" and I immediately knew you were a different kind of talent. How did you come to forge such a unique sound for your productions in a genre which is notoriously full of generic, uplifting tracks?
[Avicii] [Laughs] Well, I’ve just been working my ass off with my manager who’s been guiding me the whole way and he’s given me tips on production as well as everything so I guess that’s kind of where we found my sound.
[Avicii] I heard that track and I really wanted to remix that, and a friend of mine told me about FL Studios. And yeah, I just downloaded it and tried remixing and I just ended up getting stuck with it. [B&S] What is your process behind producing a track once struck with inspiration?
[Avicii] It’s different every time. It all depends on what kind of track: if I’m doing an original track or if I’m doing a remix, or what kind of original track I’m doing… So, it’s different every time.
[B&S] Speaking of which, do you prefer remixing or producing original tracks?
[Avicii] No, I love both its just two different ways to approach a track. Usually if I get a remix I try to start off with just one element, like a vocal or a hook or whatever, and then just move on from there and try to make a completely new track out of that one [part]. And then when doing an original it’s almost the same thing, but I make up the part, so I make up a melody, a hook, whatever. So, no, I love it just as much.
[B&S] What's it like to play in front of hundreds of dancing people every day?
[Avicii] It- it’s amazing! I mean it’s why I got into it in the first place; why I chose to do it, to fight for it professionally. I wanted that, that… The kick you get out of that you can’t compare it to anything else.
[B&S] What has been your biggest break thus far?
[Avicii] Biggest break? It’s probably “Bromance,” I think, my solo track.
[B&S] What is it they're putting in the water in Sweden that makes your people so inexplicably adept at making incredible electronic tunes?
[Avicii] Well, I think it’s a mixture between just Sweden being a really cold place for 8 months out of the year, so you don’t really have anything to do, so it’s easy to put all of your effort into making music. But then I also think it’s because there’s been so many successful producers in general from Sweden, like Swedish House Mafia or even pop producers, like Max Martin, there’s just so many. So I think they inspire all the new ones to feel like “Ah, I can make it as well in this industry!” So people actually take the time to produce, et cetera.
[B&S] What are your top 4 tracks of the moment?
[Avicii] My top 4 tracks… I would have to say its Axwell and Dimitri Vegas’ remix of “One Look” by David Tort. Then I would say Steve Angello, AN21 remix of Pendulum’s “The Island,” one of my new tracks which I haven’t named yet, and, still, “One” by Swedish House Mafia, to be honest. [B&S] Yeah, we were there when Swedish House Mafia first played it at Ultra last year and the crowd response was absolutely phenomenal. Are you playing any after parties at Ultra this year?
[Avicii] Yeah, I am. I’m playing Ultra on Friday, Saturday, and then I’m doing Ultra official after party on Sunday.
[B&S] What’s coming up for Avicii in 2011?
[Avicii] Oh, lots of stuff. There’s lots of stuff coming up. I think I have like 8 or 9 tracks this year that should be coming out.

It's finals week, and you know what that means! Life fuckin' sucks and I've got very little time to allot to blogging. So instead of boring you with my normal nonsense, I'm going to share with you my studying playlist. Some old, some brand-spanking new, all ideal (at least, for my malformed brain) for studying to. So plug in, sit forward, and study your face off to these beats.
My friends, it's March, and what this means is that for better or worse my mind is stuck on one thing and one thing only: Miami 2011. WMC (Miami's Winter Music Conference) is coming up, and along with it so is Ultra. In other words, the most fun-laiden, debauchery-fueled, and positively Bright & Shiny time of the year is upon us. This is the most festive of times, and with the endless amounts of pool parties and epic nights that come with this also comes the first real wave of 2011's club anthems. Right around now is when artists tend to start cranking out the uber club monsters that we've been waiting for, so I hope you all trained well in the preseason (i.e. winter) because things are about to get out of control. Ultra is probably the most incredible weekend of the year, as anyone who's been there can tell you. The only other place/time in the world that really comes close is Ibiza during peak season. Anyway, in honor of these most joyous occasions, today's post will be centered entirely around the huge club banging sound that will surely be blasting out of speakers all across Miami this spring.
Considering that over the past year Avicii has been the undisputed champion of the big room progressive sound that Miami is so famous for, I think it's only fitting that we start off with him. This remix of Armin Van Buuren builds slow at first, but by the end the energy is cranked up to levels that could break glass, complete with massive piano stabs, ridiculous builds and all. Deniz Koyu has been on my radar for a while now, ever since first hearing his beast of a track Lose Control last year. He's in full Miami form on this new remix, taking an already huge track by Jean Elan to new levels of fist pumping epicness here. Jean Elan - Feel Alive (Deniz Koyu Remix)
Another artist who's caught my eye recently with his masterfully progressive and gorgeous style is the Russian youngster Incognet. His newest remix of Heaven by Stephan M is a club stomper that stays true to his melodic and beautiful style, while the similarly awesome Wide Up remix lands on the techier side of the progressive spectrum. Morning Lights is probably my favorite out of the bunch. One of Incognet's classics, it's a sublime, yet still highly danceable, masterpiece that will definitely be the soundtrack to many of our late nights this spring. Stephan M - Heaven (Incognet Remix)
Hardwell has been honing his progressive-dutch sound to a true art form lately, and this follow up to his world-dominating Zero 76 collaboration with Tiesto further demonstrates why he's one of the most exciting artists coming out of the Netherlands right now. Finally, these last two are more on the underground side, with the Royal T remix representing a gorgeous old-school house reinterpretation of a new Crookers track, and the savagely tribal sounds of Groenveld embodying shades of a techier sensibility. Alright so we've been slacking a bit recently (only 11 posts in the first 21 days of february, yikes!), but fear not because we've got big things in store for this spring and this summer that we've been working on. Among some things we've got coming up are an interview with Sticky K and the resurrection of our weekly Saturday Essential mixes, except the mixes will be coming with a twist. Instead of just having one DJ do the mixes every week, we've decided that we're going to start using the weekly mix as a way to showcase talented DJs from around the world (DJs if this is something you're interested in, send us a demo mix or shoot us an email). Another thing we have coming up is later this spring we're going to start throwing events in southern California, and this summer we plan on doing a weekly club night with big name djs on the east coast, either in Washington DC or in New York, or maybe both. John Dahlback has been one of my favorite producers ever since seeing him perform on Ibiza last summer. The man is simply a masterful producer and DJ, able to easily conjure up moods and grooves like few others in the business are able to. I have two complete bombs from him here for you. The first, called Winter, is his newest single and it demonstrates a perfect execution of gorgeous piano-driven progressive house. The second, a remix of Benny Bennasi's recent single Electroman is a HUGE electro-house jam that features tribal drums and centers itself around a viciously massive synth line reminiscent of Congorock's Babylon. John Dahlback - Winter (Original Mix)
New deadmau5 remix here, and I'm happy to say that it's rather progressive and quite wonderful, sounding more like the old Random Album Title deadmau5 than the new 4x4=12 shit. My faith in the mau5 has been continuously broken down, ever since his lackluster performance at last year's ultra and all of the terrible music he's been releasing lately. However, this remix, released this week on Ministry of Sound's Chilled House Session 2011, shows him returning to form, and hopefully this is a sign of more good things to come from Mr Zimmerman. Avicii has been releasing music at a relentless pace recently, and one would probably expect that the quality would start to wane with him pumping out tunes at such a fast rate. Well, that's not the case, as this remix shows. I like the mix of the progressive sounding mallet hits with the electro drone that he seems to be favoring recently (see: the swede dreams remix I posted last week).
