Along For The Ride

In the relentless pursuit of good music that comes with being a music blogger, I've found that every once in a while, when I'm lucky, a song comes along that transcends the normal bounds of what music is supposed to do - somehow it becomes not simply a good track, but a sort of anthem that takes on a meaning entirely beyond what a 4 or 5 minute piece of noise ought to signify. That's exactly the case with Jonas Rathsman's Tobago. Unknowingly, I first heard this song during the Magician's incredible set at HARD Haunted Mansion this year and found myself dancing into an oblivion of bliss to it, but somehow it wasn't until the other day when a friend sent over the actual song that I found myself able to ascribe a name and title to this incredible tune. In the time since, I've literally been listening to it on repeat, throwing it on during parties and when I'm jamming by myself alike - it's literally that good. So, with that, I give you Tobago. May it end up being as meaningful to you as it is to me.

Say hello to Tony Junior. Based on this next song "Anigav" I'm predicting that this is a name you're going to be seeing A LOT more of around here. Simply put, this is amazingly catchy progressive house at its best, so good in fact that upon listening to it you might think it came from the hands of Avicii himself. Make sure to support the guy by showing some love to his facebook page and grabbing the release (which came out two days ago) off of beatport. PS say "Anigav" backwards to yourself.

BANGER ALERT. Bart B More and TAI are responsible for this next one, and honestly, that should be all you need to hear to know this track is absolutely massive. So I'll stop with the explanation, beyond mentioning that it's absolutely hilarious that these guys managed to sample THIS piece of youtube lore and work it into a ridiculously huge drop. Boys Noize @ Ibiza Nightclub, Washington D.C. 8/5/11

It was a warm, unassuming summer Friday night in Washington, DC when German-born techno vunderkind Alex Ridha, better known as Boys Noize, made a pit stop to blast our nation's capital with pounding beats before heading off to the infamous HARD Summer 2011 Festival in LA. Our only warning of what was to come that evening came directly from the man's twitter: "I think Washington needs some real jackin ghetto sounds tonight". I think I speak for us all when I say that was exactly what we needed to disrupt the slinking, swampy DC summer.

It is no secret that Mr. Ridha, who is equally notorious for his incredible live sets as he is for his keen studio productions, does not give a damn when he's manning the wheels of steel. Sure, he'll play to the mood of the room, as any good DJ should, but at no point will he compromise his artistic integrity by playing a track which does not have the entire room saying to themselves "What is that sick, sick man doing up there?? I've never heard anything like this!" as they compulsively dance like absolute lunatics. And Ridha most certainly lived up to our soaring expectations, sending wave after wave of raw, unadulterated "jackin ghetto sounds" straight to our brains as the dancefloor writhed in elated response. I didn't once leave the dancefloor for so much as a second, happily accepting the fact that this man had every last one of us in the palm of his hand.

A particularly memorable highlight of the night, of which there were many, had to be when he dropped a go-to track of his, DJ Deeon's "Work This M.F.". An old-school "ghetto-house" track with a simple 303 bassline, knocking drums, and a hilarious vocal sample ("HaHaHaHaHa"), the track is a main-stay in his sets for a reason. Boys Noize pumped that thing out with extreme emphasis on the low-end, sending the entire crowd into a frenzy as each kick hit.

From "Ion" to "Jeffer", each song played was mixed in meticulous fashion, layered exquisitely and timed perfectly. As the night seemed to near its end, the room heard the telling sounds of "Yeah" in the speakers, only to find it layered over an a Capella from the Chemical Brothers' "Swoon" which served as the perfect finish to a legendary set the likes of which Washington, DC has never seen before. And from what I hear from Augustus and Patrick, his set at HARD wasn't too shabby either, so be sure to look for our forthcoming review of the entire event!

English label owner, producer, and DJ, A. Skillz released this remix this past week and it’s beautiful. I'm always pleased when songs from back in the day resurface as more up to date, and equally good, remixes to find a new life. Such is the power of electronic music. A.Skillz manages to blend the soul and funk of the original with a dubby breakbeat of his own in a remarkably unique way.

I love when I can associate a good song with a good memory and I can’t listen to this one without imagining myself back in the Carl Cox tent being a loon. Good times. The original of this didn’t strike me as anything that special, not to mention it’s just a rip off of “Original Challenge” by Umek and Tomy DeClerque, but TJR comes in and gives it a techy makeover like none other. I hadn’t heard much from Mr. TJ Rozdilsky since his remix of “Spinal Scratch” by the one and only Thomas Bangalter, but I’ll be looking out for this guy in the future for sure. Underground doesn't stop.

I also came across this while going through his soundcloud, and being the Doors aficionado I am, I felt obligated to post this groovy track. Another perfect example of great old school remixes.

To put it modestly, we here at B&S have quite an infatuation with Nightriders, DCUP, and Grum. As Patrick said in an earlier post, these are matchups we dream of. The previews of these songs, part of the Get Hooked EP released today, melted me inside. The full releases... well that’s another story. Both remixes are distinctive in their own way, but the DCUP remix is probably my favorite at the moment; his vocal chopping ability continues to win me over time and time again. Grum, meanwhile, takes a progressive approach with wonderfully layered builds and drops, which , as I write this, have now begun to question which is my chosen favorite of the two (as I realize I've now listened to it almost 10 times in a row)... If you haven’t already, I suggest you throw these last few songs on some big ‘ol speakers and make room for dancing.
