This new A-Trak remix is definitely the most impressive effort I've come across by him in a long time, it might even be on par with his classic Heads Will Roll mix but I'll let you guys be the judge of that..
download: Martin Solveig - This Night Out (A-Trak Remix)
Laurent Garnier's new 'Timeless' EP on Ed Banger is pretty much exactly what the name says... a timeless piece of electro. This track is really unique in the way it develops, almost like a progressive track along the lines of classic deadmau5 except for it hits rather hard. Quite good.
download: Laurent Garnier - Jacques In The Box (feat. The L.B.S. Crew) (Original Mix)
Soulwax just does it better.
download: Joe Goddard - Gabriel (Soulwax Remix) [Removed By Request]
We've been slacking pretty hard lately, but I hope you ate your wheaties this morning because in preparation for Miami Music Week/Ultra we've got a megapost coming at you today that's literally so dumb it's clinically retarded. It is Miami after all right? I think that means we're kind of obligated to start with the biggest, most off the wall stuff.
TECHNOOOOOOOO. This newest release on Brodinski's Bromance imprint is insanely fat. Expect to hear this one devastating dancefloors inside the tents during some of the techier sets at Ultra this year. Needless to say, Pipes is a dude who you should pay attention to from now on.
download: Pipes - Sleeping (Original Mix)
Underground Sound
If you guys didn't eat your wheaties this morning, maybe you had some Cocaine and Ketamine instead? I hear either one counts as nourishment in Miami... In all seriousness (listen to the song and you'll understand), I'm excited to introduce you to the anthem for every basement in Miami this year. The long awaited "You and I" (better known as "Cocaine and Ketamine") by Fur Coat is out now on crosstown rebels.
download: Fur Coat - You and I
Light Year's newest release shows them going in a much more underground, deep house direction, and frankly it was a beautiful decision. I could eat this bassline for days. Sexy, 5AM vibes.
download: Light Year - Moderation (Original Mix)
This song is THE jam. Turn your speakers to full blast and listen to the little break after 1:30 to understand what I'm talking about. The only possible way this song could be cooler was if she was actually saying "Shots are on the house"... free shots are nice
download: Tensnake - Around The House (DJ T.'s 2011 Edit)
French Fries with some bass filled heat from dirtybird. Sidebar, I'm still waiting for patrick to learn how to do the Vogue like he says he's gonna. Will he pull it off in Miami? Tune in this time next week to find out.
download: French Fries - Yo Vogue (Original Mix)
I was waiting a long time for this remix EP to come out on the LA deep house label Culprit, and, well, it's finally out... AND IT'S AWESOME. Konrad Black puts in a supreme deep house cut here alongside a slew of other megafresh remixes. Make sure you check the whole thing out on Beatport.
download: Subb-an - What I Do (Konrad Black's "What I Did To You" Mix)
After the After-Afterparty
Some tracks for those late nights/surreal mornings when youre just trying to recuperate and relax. What better thing for that than some spacious amazing progressive house? This throwback by Inpetto always hits the spot.
download: Fragma - Toca Me (Inpetto 2008 Remix)
Super chill remix by the legendary discomaster Greg Wilson that I randomly came across on a compilation by a label called Bear Funk Records. I definitely recommend checking out their "Hibernation" compilation series (which this track came off of), its some disco fuego.
download: Social Disco Club & Maia - The Way You Move (Greg Wilson Version)
Everything In Between
When Ed Banger's SebastiAn puts out a new track or remix, for me it's always a question of which SebastiAn is going to show up. Good SebastiAn (like Embody), or bad painfully-overdistorted SebastiAn (like on pretty much his entire album). Luckily here we have a perfect example of good SebastiAn. A friend of mine best summed it up to me recently when he said "it's almost like this is what Justice was trying to do on their most recent album...and failed miserably at". Either way, this song rocks.
download: The Shoes - Time To Dance (SebastiAn Remix) *Highly Recommended
One of my first memories of falling in love with a piece of music was on a road trip at summer camp when I was maybe 12 or 13, and the older counselers who were driving us played the same Talking Heads CD in the van over and over, and in particular the song "This Must Be The Place" and by a couple hours in everyone was belting all the words to the song at the top of their lungs. That little antidote is only relevant cause that awesome song gets an awesome remix effect here, with Anna Lunoe turning it into a nice little bit of sun splashed house.
download: Cari Kennedy & Goodwill (Talking Heads cover) - Home (Anna Lunoe Remix)
And last but not least, some Soulwax is always the basis of a healthy diet. (this is kind of just a testament to me being crazy excited to see 2manydjs again at Ultra this year...you should be too)
download: Walter Murphy - A Fifth Of Beethoven (Soulwax Edit)
Fresh outta Bristol, aka the new Compton, Lukas is doing big things. His tracks have a bass-ey feel similar to his cohabitators like Julio Bashmore and Eats Everything, but his music has a distinctly more chicago house, old school vibe to them. Check it, love it, live it, support da dude on beatport.
download: Crazy P - Changes (Lukas Remix) *192 Kbps
My homeboy patrick posted that Azealea Banks video the other day, and I have to say after he introduced me to her guiles over new years, I've been straight up hooked. This next song is so catchy I'm pretty sure it's some form of a narcotic. I don't think theres a better "let's get fucked up" song that I've come across in the past year...
download: Azealia Banks - 212 ft Lazy Jay
I can't decide which is better, the song or the music video
The synth work here is so next level it's absurd. Solomun is quickly emerging as an artist we can't take our eyes off of; every track this dude releases is incredible. With that said, I'm not sure how I feel about the vocals on this one. It is a remix, so they probably requested he leave in all of the vocal track, but still it feels a little out of place here. Still a completely ridiculous track though.
download: Ron Carroll & Superfunk - Lucky Star (Solomun Remix)
The man PK referred me to this classic slice of electro the other day and I've been bumping it pretty regularly ever since. Erol Alkan or die.
download: Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Zero (Erol Alkan Rework)
I'm feeling nostalgic, so here's some more classical action for you.. Consider these your history lesson for the week. (Yes, that's DFA as in James Murphy and DFA Records)
download: Justice - Phantom II (Soulwax Remix)
If you haven’t heard Oliver $’s Doin’ Ya Thang, get out from under that rock and check it out on Sir Real's post from back in the day. That track sampled vocal cuts from some performances by Detroit’s own, Moodyman, who is probably the realest dude you’ll ever come across, and an iconic figure in the world of house. This first track samples his Red Bull Music Academy interview and is quotable as hell and it meshes perfectly with this dope beat that Homework produced (remix courtesy of Andre Crom & Martin Dawson). If you have the time, I highly suggest you check it out; It’s actually less of him being interviewed than it is just him preaching to the crowd about life and music (word is bond). This second piece of Homework, I came across on youtube of all places and is probably one of the most aptly named songs I’ve heard in a while. If anybody can identify the original song they’re sampling I would be forever indebted to you. Let those dreamy synths wash over you.
To my chagrin, this Danny Daze jaint hasn’t been posted yet, so here it is in all its glory. Probably my favorite song by the man from Miami, it pretty much defines his sound in my eyes (err.. ears). Also, check this hilarious video that features this song and make sure to support him by purchasing it on Beatport. If you find yourself in the D.C. area over Thanksgiving, make sure to pay a visit to U Street Music Hall on the 26th to see this guy drop some knowledge.
Danny Daze - Your Everything feat. Louisahhh! [Stream Only]
I actually happened upon this while searching for the original version. I decided to give it a chance and ended up liking it more than the original so I guess this Katorski guy knows what’s good. It takes a while to develop but wait for the real rhythm to creep in after the two-minute mark.
Needless to say, the Dewaele brothers don’t fuck around. This promo for Radio Soulwax pretty much sums up how we envisioned this project being created. Be sure to look out for Augustus' detailed experience of them and many other stupid-good artists in his upcoming Hard Haunted Mansion review.
Soulwax's new site is finally up after having been under construction for what felt like the last century. The plan is to make 24, one-hour-long mixes with accompanying animated cover art, like those which often accompany their live sets. Each set will have a different musical and visual theme, and this first mix is their favorite 420 song intros as expanded from the mini mix originally performed for BBC's Radio 1 a few years back. The animated cover art is both hilarious and trippy, making the mix almost more worth a look than a listen. But if you've ever wanted to brush up on some of the best records of the last 50 years, then the brothers Dawaele have got your back. They're simply role models for aspiring DJs the world over... the breadth of their musical knowledge is astounding.
Check out the first mix at RadioSoulwax.com and be sure to keep a look out for upcoming mixes from these Bright & Shiny Hall-of-Famers.
The good people over at RiotMaker Records were cool enough to send us this bad ass Fare Soldi remix the other day. We posted a streaming-only version of this song a while back, but here's the whole sh'bang. Fare Soldi continue to impress us with the versatility of their production skills; in contrast to their typical disco-fueled stlye, this track feels like straight badass electro with a fat bassline and vicious synths reminiscent of some earlier Boys Noize (a compliment of the highest order). Herr Style - Jack (Fare Soldi Jackette Remix)
If you don't know about Dillon Francis yet, consider yourself warned. Recently signed to Mad Decent, mr Francis has a fresh style that seamlessly blends bass heavy, but still melodic, electro with slurred down, almost hip-hop beats. I'm not surprised this kid caught Diplo's eye. This particular track is a perfect representation of the style Francis continues to establish as his own. DWNTWN - Transition (Dillon Francis Remix)
Highbloo has been on my radar ever since Brodinski included My Sitar in his monstrous set at this year's HARD Haunted Mansion. Time To Change Part 2 has been getting a lot of attention on the blogosphere, so here's Part 1. It's a relentless electro tune centered around an almost baroque-esque fugal synth line. I could see this one being worked into a darker themed dj set to devastating effect. Highbloo - Time To Change Part 1 (Original Mix)
The remix release of Cassius' I <3 U SO EP came out the other day, and it's stocked from top to bottom with really quality remixes. We already mentioned the awesome effort by L-VIS 1990 & The Neon Dreams on our comically underfollowed twitter, so I'll mention two others here. The Gessafelstein effort is a techy, bizarre, Siriusmo-esque piece of electro that'll suck you into some form of hypnosis if you listen to it for long enough. The Bowski remix is similarly deep, featuring a meticulous build and subtle yet huge percussion. Cassius - Les Enfants (Gessafelstein Remix)
Avicii has managed to hijack the classic by Eurhythmics and proclaim it as his own, and then release an EP with 3 versions that sound virtually identical. If that doesn't mean he's on top of the game right now, then I don't know what does. Nonetheless, bump this one like it's 1995. Avicii - Sweet Dreams (Avicii's Sweeder Dreams Remix)
A close friend of mine named Matt once wisely explained to me that the true power of dubstep lies in the sharp contrast between lightness and darkness that it can often provide. The hyper-polarization of themes, often played out between a beautiful woman's voice and dark, floor-crunching basslines, can, when done correctly, present a spectrum of emotion seldom seen elsewhere in music today. This Bassnectar remix is a perfect example of that. Ellie Goulding - Lights (Bassnectar Remix)
His Majesty Andre has been tearing it up recently, and his recently released Battle of The Spurs EP is an energy packed french house showcase that keeps up the intensity from start to finish. BBQ Sauce, starting with the name, is a track that makes no pretensions about being serious in any way shape or form. It's a fun filled french house track that shows why Andre is definitely one of the names to watch in 2011. His Majesty Andre - BBQ Sauce (Original Mix)
Released today, this one is typical Angger Dimas between the huge progressive synth lines and crazy electro breakdowns. For some reason I never feel like his tracks are mastered properly though... Kaskade - All You (Angger Dimas Remix)
Last but most certainly not least, we posted a radio rip of this track a couple weeks ago before it was released. Here's the original in all it's 320 glory.. (buy it here)
First things first. Here we have a reimagining, if you will, of Aphex Twin's On by Lazydisco. In this remake, Lazydisco adds a lot of texture and depth to an otherwise scant original track, creating what I feel is a great homage to Aphex Twin.
Known as Azari & III, Dinamo Azari and Alixander III are responsible for this next track. Fusing elements from older house music and their own unique futuristic style, these boys put together an impeccable original that will have you yearning for more.
Bag Raiders recently came out with a full length self titled album filled with electro pop gems. After several listen through's, some of the tracks are really beginning to grow on me. This 'charming' tune is a bit off the beaten path, and all the more addicting for it.
Mustang is a brand new collaborative effort between DJ Renaud Deru (Cosy Mozzy) and Andy Faisca. Based on their latest remix, I'd say they're off to quite a good start.
Flight Facilities can do no wrong. Here they've 'righted' all over an already superb C90's original track. This remix is dancey, upbeat, and downright adorable.
The Old: Treasures from the past (anything more than a week old...)
Shinichi Osawa (aka Mondo Grosso) is hands down one of my favorite producers. His influential style has brought him all over the world and reached many different musical genres, from jazz to house. With 5 solo albums and a whole slew of remixes and singles, I bring you the Japanese heavy hitter Shinichi Osawa.
Based out of California, Robot Science (aka Charlie Yin) truly captures the essence of robots. Bleeps and Bloops galore, this melodic serenade will soothe the mind and body.
I don't know much about mysterious producer Amtrak, but what I do know is that his track Alto is a masterful fusion of genres that continuously evolves with each passing second, culminating in a fantastically polished track.
This one is hilarious. Soulwax throws it down in their re-edit of a predictably classy Miss Kitten track. "Uh excuse me, uh... Would you mind to... pump?"
In case you haven't picked up Flying Lotus' album Cosmogramma, go do it right now. Full to the brim with colorful experimental tracks that will blow your mind, Cosmogramma is an amazing album from start to finish. Here I present you with one of my absolute favorites from the album, and his work in general.
Listen up chilluns. I want to let you in on a little secret about the universe. Remixes are always better. If you think otherwise, it's probably because you're a fucking clown. Now stop asking questions and steal the music posted below, because it's awesome.
The first time I heard this song was in the middle of an epic set by Tiesto on Ibiza. Let me tell you, this shit absolutely rocked the place. People - myself included - went completely mental when this song came on. Be patient and let it build up through the first minute or so.
I don't really know much about Dem Slackers, but what I do know is that this next song is extremely Bright & Shiny and that you need to listen to it as soon as possible.
Major Lazer has always had a really cool reggae-feel to their electro songs, but I never thought they made it completely coherent enough to fully work. With that said, they definitely got it right on this Gyptian remix; the Reggae singing on top of the muted synth bloops adds up to a nice chill house song.
This remix of a classic Fake Blood track is the funkiest and grooviest thing you will hear all day. It builds up through the first minute but after that it's straight funktastic Bright & Shiny house.
If you haven't already noticed, I finish all my posts with a homework session. The point of these sessions is that I lower your defenses with a post chock full of wonderful music, and then proceed to floor you with some serious shit at the end, if you can handle it, with the intentions of broadening your musical horizons. This week's homework assignment is no different. The first place I heard these next two songs was in Space Ibiza during a pulsing, grinding, absolutely mind-blowing set by the legendary 2ManyDjs. Hope you can handle it.
p.s all of today's tracks are meant to be played on a quality sound system (car?) or headphones, listening to them on a pc or laptop is highly UNrecommended. Do yourself a favor.
