Forget Mixtape Sundays, this is mixtape Wednesday. Check out these monster mixes from a pair of our favorite twosomes: Coat of Arms & Fur Coat.
First up is a deeply sexual mix from Venezuelan duo and recent Crosstown Rebels signees, Fur Coat. The mix is replete with hard-edged, yet classy deep house bangers that are sure to get booties shaking at all hours of the day. It so vividly reminds me of the techno journey known as "Get Lost Miami" that I get goose bumps just listening to it. And if you haven't heard Fur Coat's underground anthem "You and I" yet, then your life needs some direction. Get it together.
Next is a mix from Coat of Arms, the British duo comprised of Chris James (Birmingham) and Eats Everything (Bristol), and is sure to be in my rotation for most of May. Equal parts bass and house, this mix is a touch more upbeat; perfect for the house head trying to understand what all this Bristol fuss is about. If this kind of thing suits your fancy, and it will, be sure to keep your eyes glued to your browser for our interview with Eats Everything (now a month in the making). It's coming.
Today marks the digital release of Coat of Arms' remix of "What You Need" on Pets Recordings. I've been lusting after this track since I first heard it in Eats Everything's next-level Essential Mix for BBC R1. The artist of the original track remains unknown (for whatever silly reason), but apparently he's kinda like a big deal. This effort from Chris James and Dan Pearce (AKA Eats Everything) of Coat of Arms is a certified bomb, with bouncing kicks, exciting drum fills, R&B vocals, soothing synths and a depth that cannot be ignored, combining to form a track as suitable for the club as it is your living room. With support from artists like Maceo Plex, Soulclap, and Deetron, you know this EP is a biggun. Both the B-side mixes from BrEaCh are also more than worth your time, so head to beatport to check em out and support. More Coat of Arms after the jump.
Not to toot our own horn or anything, but ever since we here at Bright & Shiny got wind of the uprising being staged in the English city of Bristol, we've been posting, and posting, and posting about it. We simply cannot get enough of the futuristic bass-infused house sounds pouring out of the place, and that's due in no small part to the fine work of Dan Pearce, AKA Eats Everything. You see, Pearce has a strange affliction which makes him prone to eat everything, and this shows in his productions. His work pays homage to house and bass-music greats as often as it does to R&B stars of the '90s and early 2000's (a venerable golden age for pop music), like Jagged Edge and Faith Evans. In short,
Eats Everything is putting the black back in house music.
Since this past spring, his tracks have seen release on Berlin's Pets Recordings and San Fransisco's dirtybird Recordings, with more to come. In addition to being an ace producer, Pearce is an equally talented DJ, peppering his mixes with exclusive 'beefy' reworks that you'll only hear at his hands. So it comes as no surprise that Pete Tong, being the tastemaker that he is, commissioned our friend Eats Everything for an Essential Mix, which aired last Saturday on BBC Radio 1. Recorded live at Bristol In:Motion, the mix is a particularly energetic entry into the series' hallowed halls, and is chock full of exclusive Eats Everything edits and unreleased tracks you're likely to only hear here. So give it a spin and, as always, don't forget to turn up the volume! Tracklist & bonus tunes after the jump.
Here are some tracks to get weird to on this fine Halloween evening. I've amassed some fat ass beats in the last month that need some sharin' with you, the fine people of the Bright & Shiny Nation. Play all of these with loads of bass and lots of decibels.
BRISTOL
The fine people of Bristol, UK have been holding it down as of late, which should come as no surprise considering they're changing the face of dance music as we know it. With a little bit of bass and a lot of love, these fine young men have been churning out the best beats in the business.
First up is Coat of Arms, composed of two B&S future-hall-of-famers: Dan Pearce AKA Eats Everything, and Chris James (who's actually from Birmingham, but who's counting?). download: Coat of Arms - Lovin' Together
Eats Everything has been blowing up the BBC Radio 1 airwaves as of late with their support of his recent releases. With support from Pete Tong, Jaymo & Andy George, as well as Annie Mac, you know this man's got some talent. See if you can spot the sample in this one. Eats Everything - The Size
REST OF WORLD Subb-an is another fine fellow from the UK. Dunno anything about him really, because Augustus showed me this track last week and I've listened to it at least once daily since. Funky ass deep ass trax. download: Maya Jane Coles - Get Away (Subb-an Deeper Remix)
Tim Green, also of the UK (surprise!) has been a favorite producer of mine since I heard his remix of "Live Those Days Tonight" last June, and this track channels the same bouncy, happy house vibes that made that one so special. download: Tim Green - Cherry
Maceo Plex of Madrid, ES has got, in the words of Usher, "the beats to make the booties go *CLAP*" I dunno what it is about him, but women love to get down to his deep tracks. download: Maceo Plex - Stop Your Hate
And while we're on the subject of deep house, keep an eye out for our interview with Toronto's Art Department in the coming days!
Futureboogie Recordings have been making quite a splash in the underground house world recently and for damn good reason. With a thin catalog of only three releases, it has already become abundantly clear that these fellows out of Bristol mean business. In just three releases Futureboogie has begun to cultivate a sound entirely unique to the Bristol scene; an innovative and modern sound which is in part inspired by the strong UK culture of bass music, but is entirely endebted to the sound of Chicago house's past. Among the all-star cast of artists they support are Christophe, Behling, Coat of Arms and the man everyone's talking about these days, Julio Bashmore. With their souls rooted in the past and their eyes strained toward the future, its no wonder the artists of Futureboogie Recordings have found themselves so quickly in the warm hearts of house-lovers the world over.
Here's a taste of what these Bristol boys are about:
