Bright & Shiny Exclusive: Interview with Eats Everything

Since his track "Entrance Song" appeared prominently in Maya Jane Coles' Essential Mix last summer, Eats Everything (real name Dan Pearce) has taken the dance music world by storm. In that same year, Pearce saw his very own entry onto the shortlist for Essential Mix of the year, followed by numerous releases on a list of labels which reads much the same as a list of our favorites might: Dirtybird, Pets, Defected, Get Physical, Nurvous, Hypercolour, Futureboogie, and most recently on Jaymo & Andy George's fledgling imprint, Moda Black.  2011 was a good year for a man who is as down to earth and amiable as his music is smashing, and 2012 is looking even better, with the release of his subtle, Dr. Dre-inspired track "Jagged Edge" still topping charts two months after its release. We had a chance to sit down with Eats Everything this past March following an appearance at the legendary Get Lost in Miami to discuss everything from an upcoming collaboration with Disclosure, to mixing at 118 beats per minute, and male ejaculation.

Mixtape Sunday: Episode 008

Eats Everything has been a definite favorite of ours around here. He's a fantastic performer and his bouncy bass-driven style of house is infectious. However, this mix he did last week for Resident Advisor is delivered with a mild mannered energy; something his signature sound would not lead you to expect. Don't let that feed you any doubt though because this is an excellent mix and in his own words "It is my favourite mix I have ever done and it showcases a different side to me from the bangers that I suppose I am known for playing." You can check out the few questions he answered about the mix here, and check out the tracklist on the soundcloud page. Also, get excited for the write up of our interview with him coming out this week!

Can't Get Better

New material coming in from the boys at Futureboogie is always a welcome sight. Their latest release, which dropped digitally 3 days ago, features an original and remix package from a mysterious new duo called White Lamp. I couldn't find anything on them, other than that the group consists of a London-based producer/DJ and a Bristol-based vocalist. It's the two remixes that caught my eye, however. The first comes from Ron Basejam, an anagram of James Baron from notable UK electronic live-band Crazy P. Baron creates a seriously mellowed, if not loungy vibe here with airy atmospherics surrounding the vocalist's soulful crooning. This is one of those deeper tunes perfect for winding down a hectic day, one that calls for serious relaxation.

The other mix on the release couldn't be more different. Coming from the minds of Bright & Shiny favorites Eats Everything and Christophe, I wouldn't recommend winding down with this, as its steadily building 303 bassline just makes you want to jack around in a sweaty, dimly lit basement somewhere.

Support the brains behind the works and buy the full release, or your songs of choice, over at beatport.

Heard about this next one over at the Nashville Nights blog. Its a remix coming from yet another new producer duo, this time hailing from Melbourne and dubbing themselves Ferrari Campari. Admittedly, the first half of the mix didn't do a whole lot to impress me. That deep, clubby bassline is there, as is the punchy percussion, but it needed something more. Luckily, there's a big, ethereal breakdown a little over halfway through that sets the whole thing off. Those metallic synths that come in along with the pitched vocal serve as the missing piece, and suddenly you find yourself listening to a bit of a banger. And what's more, these newcomers are giving away their debut mix for free, straight from their soundcloud. Listen and download below!

What You Need (Coat of Arms Remix)

Today marks the digital release of Coat of Arms' remix of "What You Need" on Pets Recordings. I've been lusting after this track since I first heard it in Eats Everything's next-level Essential Mix for BBC R1. The artist of the original track remains unknown (for whatever silly reason), but apparently he's kinda like a big deal. This effort from Chris James and Dan Pearce (AKA Eats Everything) of Coat of Arms is a certified bomb, with bouncing kicks, exciting drum fills, R&B vocals, soothing synths and a depth that cannot be ignored, combining to form a track as suitable for the club as it is your living room. With support from artists like Maceo Plex, Soulclap, and Deetron, you know this EP is a biggun.  Both the B-side mixes from BrEaCh are also more than worth your time, so head to beatport to check em out and support. More Coat of Arms after the jump.

Eats Everything + Essential Mix

Not to toot our own horn or anything, but ever since we here at Bright & Shiny got wind of the uprising being staged in the English city of Bristol, we've been posting, and posting, and posting about it. We simply cannot get enough of the futuristic bass-infused house sounds pouring out of the place, and that's due in no small part to the fine work of Dan Pearce, AKA Eats Everything.  You see, Pearce has a strange affliction which makes him prone to eat everything, and this shows in his productions.  His work pays homage to house and bass-music greats as often as it does to R&B stars of the '90s and early 2000's (a venerable golden age for pop music), like Jagged Edge and Faith Evans. In short,

Eats Everything is putting the black back in house music.

Since this past spring, his tracks have seen release on Berlin's Pets Recordings and San Fransisco's dirtybird Recordings, with more to come. In addition to being an ace producer, Pearce is an equally talented DJ, peppering his mixes with exclusive 'beefy' reworks that you'll only hear at his hands. So it comes as no surprise that Pete Tong, being the tastemaker that he is, commissioned our friend Eats Everything for an Essential Mix, which aired last Saturday on BBC Radio 1. Recorded live at Bristol In:Motion, the mix is a particularly energetic entry into the series' hallowed halls, and is chock full of exclusive Eats Everything edits and unreleased tracks you're likely to only hear here. So give it a spin and, as always, don't forget to turn up the volume! Tracklist & bonus tunes after the jump.

Halloween House

Here are some tracks to get weird to on this fine Halloween evening.  I've amassed some fat ass beats in the last month that need some sharin' with you, the fine people of the Bright & Shiny Nation.  Play all of these with loads of bass and lots of decibels.

BRISTOL
The fine people of Bristol, UK have been holding it down as of late, which should come as no surprise considering they're changing the face of dance music as we know it.  With a little bit of bass and a lot of love, these fine young men have been churning out the best beats in the business.

First up is Coat of Arms, composed of two B&S future-hall-of-famers: Dan Pearce AKA Eats Everything, and Chris James (who's actually from Birmingham, but who's counting?).
download: Coat of Arms - Lovin' Together

Waifs & Strays, also of Bristol, make bouncing tech house which is very characteristic of their fine city, but a little techier than most.
download: Waifs & Strays - Yeah Yeah

Eats Everything has been blowing up the BBC Radio 1 airwaves as of late with their support of his recent releases.  With support from Pete Tong, Jaymo & Andy George, as well as Annie Mac, you know this man's got some talent.  See if you can spot the sample in this one.
Eats Everything - The Size

REST OF WORLD
Subb-an is another fine fellow from the UK.  Dunno anything about him really, because Augustus showed me this track last week and I've listened to it at least once daily since.  Funky ass deep ass trax.
download: Maya Jane Coles - Get Away (Subb-an Deeper Remix)

Tim Green, also of the UK (surprise!) has been a favorite producer of mine since I heard his remix of "Live Those Days Tonight" last June, and this track channels the same bouncy, happy house vibes that made that one so special.
download: Tim Green - Cherry

TEED is, how you say in American....? The man.  He's so prolific in so many styles with such consistency it makes my head spin.  This one's a little deeper than most his tracks, and I love it. Props to Crosstown Rebels on the excellent remix commission on this one.
download: Fur Coat & Argenis Brito - Space Ballad (Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs Remix)

Y'all better know about Azari & III by now.  They're bringing that analog, diva house sound back like its 1999.
download: Ultra Nate, Quentin Harris - Give It 2 U (Azari & III Remix)

Maceo Plex of Madrid, ES has got, in the words of Usher,  "the beats to make the booties go *CLAP*"  I dunno what it is about him, but women love to get down to his deep tracks.
download: Maceo Plex - Stop Your Hate

And while we're on the subject of deep house, keep an eye out for our interview with Toronto's Art Department in the coming days!

Have a downright freaky Hallow's Eve!

Julio Bashmore Essential Mix on BBC Radio 1

Ever since Claude Von Stroke released his first EP on San Fransisco-based label dirtybird, Julio Bashmore has been keeping it real with some of the freshest sounds in the dance music game.  Inspired by Chicago house, a healthy serving of UK bass, and even a sprinkling of hip-hop, Julio's music is unparalleled in quality and dance-ability.

Last Saturday, Julio's Essential Mix aired on BBC Radio 1, one of dance music's biggest stages.  From the very moment the analog sounds of "Battle for Middle You" poured from my speakers and sloshed around inside my hollow cranium, I knew this kid was special.  And I'm not the only one who thinks so: his records have received support from the likes of Teki Latex to Jesse Rose.  But now, with his entry into the vaunted halls of Pete Tong's Essential Mix, its been made official: Julio Bashmore is the future; the Bristol sound is here to stay.

Be sure to give this mix a once over if you have ever thought to yourself, at any point and for any reason, that you like to dance.  Tracklist and bonus mix after the jump.

Weekend Glow

I'm finding it hard to accept that summer is actually over, which is something I unfortunately had to confront with my first day of classes starting today at 8 in the morning.. Luckily it's thursday which means the weekend is upon us and I can pretend like it's still summer for at least a couple more days. I've got a selection of massive tracks to help jumpstart your weekend so you can pretend like me that it's still the golden season for a little bit longer. Or at least they'll help you rage like it.

This first track comes from Myon and Shane 54, who you might remember for their awesome bootleg of Wonderwall. They've done it again here with a really catchy and listenable big room remix of A Million Stars by BT. I really like this sort of electro-tinged approach to progressive house that seems to be getting used more and more these days. Reminds me a lot of Alesso.
Download: BT feat. Kirsty Hawkshaw - A Million Stars (Myon & Shane 54 Summer of Love Intro Mix)

Next up I have the latest from Bright & Shiny homeboy and fellow UCSB student Ekstra along with Dave Tannin: an absolutely bomb bootleg of the Carte Blanche remix of  Scissor Sisters' classic 'Any Which Way.' The bootleg, which honestly sounds more like an official remix, is a straight up  stomper with a hard knocking electro drop. Be sure to follow both of them on facebook to keep up with their latest sounds (Ekstra & Dave Tannin aka dxdt).
Download: Scissor Sisters - Any Which Way (Ekstra & Dave Tannin Bootleg)

This next track is a bit different from the last two, falling way further on the tech house spectrum, but it's nonetheless just as gigantic. This has been a staple in sets recently by all stars like Claude Vonstroke and J. Phlip, and for good reason. This track is absolutely badass. The 808 drums in it take you straight back to the jackin' 90s but with a fresh, bass-heavy 2011 style to it. Eats Everything has emerged recently to be one of our favorite up and coming artists at Bright & Shiny, start listening at the build at 2:45 to see why. Show some support and grab the track off of beatport here.
Stream Only: Eats Everything & Worthy - Tric Trac (Original Mix)

LA Riots decided to release their personal mix of the MSTRKRFT classic 'Bounce' for free on their facebook the other day. It's a  party-ready, absolutely jumping track, perfectly tailored for destroying dancefloors. Weekend approved.
Download: MSTRKRFT - Bounce (LA Riots Unreleased Remix)

Another party starter that's perfect for the weekend, Chuckie's latest remix of Joachim Garraud goes back to his traditional bouncy dutch style, and it's good to see Chuckie back at what he does best because for a while it seemed like he was wandering into kind of generic electro-house type stuff. This track isn't released yet, but you can grab the 320 copy below cause we're good like that.
Download: Joachim Garraud - Are U Ready (Chuckie Rmx)

Finally to round things out this next track is from the (way) deeper end of the spectrum. I found it alongside some other high quality deepness on the Beatport September Deep House Chart. The bass and vocal sample on it are outrageously catchy. House Nation. Bump this on a quality sound system to truly appreciate the old school jackin' vibes on this one.
Download: S.A.S. - House Nation (Original Mix)

Also, some people jumping off stuff..

Happy weekend.

We need to talk. There's something I need to tell you.  I've been meaning to say this for a long time, but I don't really know how to put it. You see-- God, this is so hard for me. I never thought it would come to this. Well, here goes nothing... I love deep house.

Here are some tracks we here at Bright & Shiny have been loving and thumping all month long.
