Bold

German producer B-Ju boldly made his way onto my "to watch" list with his tricked out, slow and sleazy remix of Wool & Cerebral Vortex's "Erotic Dancer". His latest effort, an original production soon to be released on the Squelch & Clap label is in good keeping with the UK funky/hip-hop influenced sound that characterized that remix, a sound and vibe I've grown increasingly fond of over the past few months. Featuring a sample from Brandy's "I Wanna Be Down" (a sample also used by Blawan in his massive "Getting Me Down" release) and some bouncy percussion, things really get going for me at the breakdown around halfway through. Take a listen below, and keep an eye out for more from this young beat-wizard. With releases through acclaimed labels like Dirtybird and S&C already under his belt, it's clear we've got a lot to look forward to.

More yet-to-be-released goodness from abroad, this time from the eccentric haircut sporting Parisian they call Bambounou. Out July 9th on ClekClekBoom, the star of this two track release is "Night", a garage thumper that chugs along a bed of grimey percussion and ravey synths. It's pretty easy to picture this one going off in some dark warehouse basement somewhere. CLEK CLEK MATERIAL.

And since we're on the subject of ClekClekBoom releases, might as well throw this preview up as well, this time coming from none other than French Fries. I don't have a lot to say about this song that isn't readily apparent upon listening. Justin Martin dropped "What to Do" at U Street Music Hall during their Dirtybird residency over the weekend and things got a little more than crazy. French Fries has demonstrated a strong affection for that ghetto-tech infused house sound with his last couple of releases, this one's no different.

This post wouldn't be much of a post without some download-ables, so here's two. The first comes from Julio Bashmore, who really needs no introduction to any semi-educated electronic music enthusiast, but who  burst onto the scene in 2011 and has been one of our favorite producers ever since. It's called "Troglodytes" and is the 2nd release with his newly founded Broadwalk Records label. Admittedly, I needed a little bit of time for this track to really grow on me, but its chilled out sound is quite nice after a few listens. This is a tune for the poolside.

Bit of an oldie, but it's just plain pretty.

Julio Bashmore Essential Mix on BBC Radio 1

Ever since Claude Von Stroke released his first EP on San Fransisco-based label dirtybird, Julio Bashmore has been keeping it real with some of the freshest sounds in the dance music game.  Inspired by Chicago house, a healthy serving of UK bass, and even a sprinkling of hip-hop, Julio's music is unparalleled in quality and dance-ability.

Last Saturday, Julio's Essential Mix aired on BBC Radio 1, one of dance music's biggest stages.  From the very moment the analog sounds of "Battle for Middle You" poured from my speakers and sloshed around inside my hollow cranium, I knew this kid was special.  And I'm not the only one who thinks so: his records have received support from the likes of Teki Latex to Jesse Rose.  But now, with his entry into the vaunted halls of Pete Tong's Essential Mix, its been made official: Julio Bashmore is the future; the Bristol sound is here to stay.

Be sure to give this mix a once over if you have ever thought to yourself, at any point and for any reason, that you like to dance.  Tracklist and bonus mix after the jump.

it's not you, it's me

We need to talk. There's something I need to tell you.  I've been meaning to say this for a long time, but I don't really know how to put it. You see-- God, this is so hard for me. I never thought it would come to this. Well, here goes nothing... I love deep house.

Here are some tracks we here at Bright & Shiny have been loving and thumping all month long.

Claude VonStroke at U Street Music Hall, Washington, DC 8/3/2011

Last night, the nation's capitol was fortunate enough to be blessed by the bass-laiden sounds of deep tech house maestro, Claude VonStroke. The Dirty Bird label boss and world-renowned DJ took over U Street Music Hall with a devastating selection of thumpin' jams and good vibes that had the dance floor pulsing well into the wee hours of the morn. NOTE: All songs in this post must be played loudly and with sufficient bass (read: LOTS) or you're literally missing the whole point.

Download: Claude VonStroke - Chimps (Re-Edit)

His performance reinforced why he's properly revered around the world as a DJ and pioneer of the bass-fueled sub-genre of modern house. His set ebbed and flowed with the distinct touch of greatness, as we found ourselves marveling at the unique sounds percolating from of the speakers one moment, and then jacking uncontrollably the next.

Download: Claude VonStroke & Justin Martin - Beat That Bird (Original Mix)

At no point in the three hour, genre-defying set did Claude let up, feeding the packed dancefloor consistently with some of the best tracks I've ever laid ears on. Not once did he let the knowing smile fall from his face as he poked and prodded the fine people of DC with beautiful bass and wondrous treble.

Download: Claude VonStroke - Who's Afraid of Detroit (Original Mix)

At one point I suggested he play "Battle for Middle You" by Bright & Shiny All-Star Julio Bashmore, an artist Claude is credited for discovering and a track that I've been playing non-stop since May, but have never had the fortune of hearing in a club setting. I held a desperate message up to the DJ booth, thinking now might be my chance to hear it with the full force only a PA can afford you, but Claude met my plea with only a smile and a shrug, as if to explain that the song simply wouldn't work right then. I didn't mind, as the man clearly knows way more than I do about every subject in the universe, and I encouraged him despite it.

Download: Julio Bashmore - Battle For Middle You (Original Mix)

Later on, around 3AM as his time was winding down, Claude did something up there I'll never forget and can't quite explain.  As I heard the wonky "wow-wow's" of "Battle for Middle You" jump brashly from the speakers I went mental, yelling and screaming at the top of my lungs... And others joined me as the track crescendoed, sending the club into a bass-fueled frenzy. Claude of course had the good sense to the play track all the way out, providing the perfect end to a phenomenal set of retro-future house music.

Futureboogie Recordings [Bristol, UK]

Futureboogie Recordings have been making quite a splash in the underground house world recently and for damn good reason. With a thin catalog of only three releases, it has already become abundantly clear that these fellows out of Bristol mean business. In just three releases Futureboogie has begun to cultivate a sound entirely unique to the Bristol scene; an innovative and modern sound which is in part inspired by the strong UK culture of bass music, but is entirely endebted to the sound of Chicago house's past. Among the all-star cast of artists they support are Christophe, Behling, Coat of Arms and the man everyone's talking about these days, Julio Bashmore. With their souls rooted in the past and their eyes strained toward the future, its no wonder the artists of Futureboogie Recordings have found themselves so quickly in the warm hearts of house-lovers the world over.

Here's a taste of what these Bristol boys are about:

Coat of Arms - Is This Something (Original Mix) by Bright & Shiny

Christophe - The Force (Original Mix) by Bright & Shiny

Behling - Without You (Original Mix) by Bright & Shiny

Feature Post: Julio Bashmore

As you guys may have noticed, Julio Bashmore has been a name on the tip of all our tongues here at Bright & Shiny ever since we heard the sensational "Battle for Middle You" for the first time. Put simply, his sound is completely mesmerizing. It's a breath of fresh air in an often over-saturated market of fist pumping electro. It's music you can groove to in a dark sweaty basement with your eyes wide shut. People in the electronic scene like to throw around the saying "house music is a feeling" often, sometimes undeservedly. Frankly, it's that phrase exactly that comes to mind when listening to Bashmore's music, yet it doesn't feel cheesy or cliché in the slightest. Take a listen to his bubbly remix of Mosca's "Tilt Shift" or let the deep sub bass frequencies of "Footsteppin''" tickle your bones and you should have an idea of what I'm talking about. Be on the lookout for big big things coming from this young Bristol based producer in the future.

This little number's out on Futureboogie Recordings June 20th, remember to support!

Catching Z's

As mentioned on our facebook page and twitter, we're looking for talented graphic designers to join the Bright & Shiny team and help us out with our next project. If you or someone you know would be interested or would like to know more, shoot us an e-mail at admin@brightshinymusic.com. And now for the music.

Turbo Recordings ZZAfrika Remix compilation drops digitally in two days. Featuring remixes from the likes of Lightyear, Tomas Andersson, Crowdpleaser, and many more, you're not going to want to miss it. The leaked Gesaffelstein remix seems to be getting the most attention, with Busy P already calling it the remix of the year. I've got Julio Bashmore's re-work today as well: a much more melodic, down-tempo lick to lounge to.

Now, it seems to me it's been a bit too long since we've posted some quality disco-inspired funk. I hope to fix that problem with the next couple of songs, starting off with a classic french house sounding remix from Broke One.

Digitalfoxglove (DFG) first came to my attention with his slick remix of Louis La Roche's "My Turn". As mentioned in his bio, he's very much into those more mysterious, dreamy, and melodic sounds, something that is evident with "Someone Else". The track grips you right from the beginning with a steadily building intro and continues to hold on with an intricate blend of 80's style synths and vocal effects.

Aeroplane dropped this number from Rex the Dog when Patrick and I saw him on Wednesday to great effect. With those captivating chord progressions, it's easy to see (*hear) why. Speaking of Aeroplane, we had the fortune of catching up with Vito after the concert for an interview, so be on the lookout for that very soon!

Broke One's Stop Making Sense EP dropped pretty recently, featuring his original "Go Go Go" along with a slew of remixes from house heavy hitters like Treasure Fingers and Evil Nine, whose re-workings I have below. They're both highly enjoyable, though I'm partial to Evil Nine's quirkier interpretation. Check out the full release on beatport here.

This And That

Summer jobs have consumed my life. Free time has been unexpectedly scarce lately, which has delayed your regular dosing of musical treats. My apologies. So here are a whole lotta songs I've been holding on to and some I've recently come across. Enjoy.

Even if this song weren't golden I would still be posting it solely because of my love for Super Smash Bros. (For those of you who don't get the reference, go and find yourself a childhood). However, this guy doesn't just have a sweet name. Avery Henderson, Falcon Punch, takes the 70's track Darlin' by Delegration, keeps the bassline and guitar riffs, flips a few things around, and cuts most of the original vocals to produce this gem.

Falcon Punch - Where You'll Stay [Download]

Para One and San Serac recently teamed up to form Slice & Soda and released a Year of The Dragon EP with a few remixes on it. The Villa remix adds quite a bit more energy to the otherwise plain original, spicing it up with a higher tempo and more intense instrumentals.

Slice & Soda - Year of The Dragon (Villa Remix) [Download]

Afrojack remixes an indie pop band song? OK, I'll go with it. He doesn't seem to take his usual approach, but there's still a distinct Dutch house sound in the drop. If your undecided about the lyrics, like some seem to be, there's also an instrumental version. Props to the Afroman for branching out.

The Wombats - Techno Fan (Afrojack Extended Club Remix) [Download]

The Wombats - Techno Fan (Extended Instrumental Version) [Download]

16 year old French producer, Madeon, Does some serious work on this Deadmau5 original. He pretty much only uses the vocals of Greta Svabo Bech and does the rest hemself, which pleases me because he gets rid of all that dubstep nonsense. The heavier electro comes in at around 1:23 and is gorgeous. He has complex production skillz seldom shown by anyone near his age. If you haven't checked out any of his originals, his remix of The Island, or his remix of Que Veux Tu, also posted in our Yelle interview, please do so here. Look out for this kid.

Madeon - Shuriken [Download]

Julio Bashmore touches up this Classixx song with his signature beats and synths and doesn't dissapoint.

Classixx - Into The Valley ft. Karl Dixon (Julio Bashmore Remix) [Download]

This Swedish young gun signed with Sebastian Ingrosso's label, Refune, released his 'Dynamite' EP a few months ago, has come out with huge remixes, and has been supported by the likes of Avicii, SHM, and Pete Tong. Alesso is blowing up fast. If you haven't heard of him already, the songs I'm about to throw at you will surely convince you of his ability.

Alesso - Nillionaire [Download]

Tim Berg - Alcoholic (Alesso Taking it Back Remix) [Download]

Ready For The Weekend (Get Retarded)

I come bearing gifts of the best kind: wonderful music hand selected for the shenanigans of the weekend. Happy Friday.

Calvin Harris has had a massive 2011 so far. After taking a bit of a break since the release of his last album, he stormed back in 2011 with the dropping of Awooga and primetime performances during WMC, and now he's got another total bomb of a track: Bounce. The song, a collaboration with Kelis, has all the trademark Calvin Harris elements we've come to know and love him for - catchy melody, lots of fun, completely sick. It isn't released yet, but we've gotten our hands on a preview (192kbps, but NOT a radio rip) copy that should hold you over till the official release. Grab it while it's hot.
Calvin Harris ft. Kelis - Bounce (Original Mix)

Next up we have a remix we got in the mail from 19 year old Florida producer DallasK. The track, a remix of Nero, goes from big room progressive house into a bass-heavy, dutch fusion of a drop that can only be described by the word 'madness.' Seriously, the first time I played this track and the drop came blaring out of the speakers at me I probably looked like I had lost my mind to anyone watching I was dancing so retardedly.
Nero - Guilt (DallasK Remix)

Hardwell has been really taking over recently, with a string of massive releases following up his Zero 76 collaboration with Tiesto. Today I have two of Hardwell's newest and most epic tracks to date, and they're literally both so amazing I'm not really sure which to start with. Martin Solveig's most recent EP Ready To Go (vocals by Kele of Bloc Party), was definitely solid but for some reason I never reeally felt it that much. Hardwell managed to figure out what the track was missing and transforms it here into a piece of progressive house so flawless it's mind blowing. Encoded, the other Hardwell track I have for you is an original that's equally as bomb but has more of a dutch/techy edge to it.
Martin Solveig ft. Kele - Ready 2 Go (Hardwell Remix)

Hardwell - Encoded (Original Mix)

What can be said about Skrillex that hasn't already been said. The dude is a lunatic or a genius depending on how you look at it. His music has a power and style to it that's unlike anything else out there right now. This track hits HARD. Don't say I didn't warn you.
Skrillex - Do Da Oliphant (Original Mix)

The synths on this one are utterly amazing. Soooo nice.
Human Life - Wherever We Are (Original Mix)

Jaymo & Andy George, two of BBC Radio 1's dope house djs, have put together a track here with a beat so twisted and strangely dance-inducing it sounds like it could've been made by some italians named Crookers. It's sick to see that these guys are as good of producers as they are DJs. I'm sure we'll be seeing some more massive releases from these two soon.
Andy George & Jaymo - Midnight (Original Mix)

And finally I'll leave you guys with a track by one of our favorite producers out of England right now, Julio Bashmore. Throw this on at the end of the night when you're trying to unwind. Straight gorgeous.
Julio Bashmore - Craboon (Original Mix)

Return of the Real

After a long and inexcusable absence due to computer troubles, I, Sir Real, have returned. I missed you, my dearest friends, very much and promise never to leave you again. Now, I bring you house music.

With three years in the public eye, Lone has proven himself a producer capable of excellence with any number of styles. Now, in 2011, we find Lone showing yet another side, and I suspect this one's here to stay. His entire EP, released April 11, is perfect. You buy it now. This track demonstrates his unique style beautifully, a spacey sound which pays homage to the tradition of Chicago house. Welcome to the future of house.
Lone - Rapid Racer (Original Mix)

A regular-lookin' dude from Bristol, Julio Bashmore separated himself from the bustling bass scene with his cultivated, and decidedly techy take on house music. This track straight blows my fuckin' mind, that's the only way to put it. At first glance, you think the song is just about fully developed by the 2-minute mark, and then you sense the real song stirring from the depths around 3:12, taking the track to an unprecedented level of bangin'. Once again, the future of house.
Julio Bashmore - Battle For Middle You (Original Mix)

Continuing with the trend of happy house are the Bingo Players. Surprising, right? The Bingo Boys have traded in their thumping, progressive-dutch sound we know and love for a summery, french house inspired feel that they pull off without breaking a sweat.
Bingo Players - Cry (Just A Little) (Original Mix)

clubhaus
Avicii is at it once again on this remix and he's showing no signs of stopping. If you haven't been keeping up with him since our interview, you might wanna head over to beatport and buy all of the outrageous tracks he's released since then.
Armin Van Buuren - Drowning ft. Laura V (Avicii Remix)
